The 1936 speedster at Meadowbrook was first listed on the web site as quote A genuine example unquote. In the auction catalog the authenticity was not mentioned. The chassis No. given was 2914E. This No. is missing one digit. If you presume they left the first No. off the No. should be 32914E which would make this car a early 1935. It is listed as a 1936.

Just an update: The 36 Auburn Speedster sold (after the auction) for over $300,000.

The phaeton DID sell. It went for $154,000. The cabriolet supercharged 812 Cord did not sell. Top bid of $140,000
The phaeton was newly restored but the sportsman was an older restoration.
But I'm still surprised that it wasn't bid higher, since it's such a desireable car!

$140,000. The auction catalog entry says that the car's history before 1997 isn't known, so that might have had a lot to do with it. If you're going to spend the money it takes to buy an 812 Cabriolet these days, you want to know it's genuine...at least I would. :-)

That right hand drive Speedster (at Gooding) may be the same one that was for sale two years ago, when they were asking $250,000. It's a nice looking car, but the right hand drive is a detraction for a car being sold in the USA.

The one I thought was odd was the 1936 Auburn Speedster. On the website photos it looked to be in such excellent condition and had been an award-winner recently, and yet the top bid was nearly $100,000 less then these cars have been getting at other auctions. I wonder what was up with that one. Maybe the photos lied. :)
I look forward to seeing what the yellow one at Gooding & Company's Pebble Beach auction this year goes for.

I noticed that the Cord 812 S/C convertible didn't meet reserve at the RM auction. Neither did the 36 Auburn speedster or the 31 Auburn speedster
I thought for sure that the Cord would do well, since it's such a rare model.

Very strange....
