Thank you. This time I found it. According to Appendix V in Josh Malk's book, the engine was originally with the frame.

Your engine number should start with either FB or FC. The number is located on a small machined surface on the left side of the engine above a bolt hole where the bell housing mounts to tthe engine.

My father bought a partially restored '37 Cord Beverly a little over 30 years ago - from a restorer in Wickenburg Arizona. We drove out (all 7 of us) in a station wagon and trailered the car back to Ohio in 1973. My father had always wanted a Cord since he first saw one when he was about 13 or 14 years old. He never got around to restoring it and the car has been in a warehouse for the last 30+ years. Although I have been able to locate the frame number, the engine number does not seem to make sense. The engine number appears to be F 3020 BC - this is stamped in the center just above where the gear box attaches to the engine. Shouldn't it be FA or FB rather than just F?
