Well done Trevor. I had the advantage of my car being completely dismantled.

Here you go, all done fits nice and snug, and I get to stay clean for a change.

Trevor well I suppose that is a solution however I would be interested to see a picture of how it was done. The tapered hole in the steering wheel is fairly small.
A slotting machine would be better suited.

No, we have removed it and will do it on the milling machine. But I think you may be referring to the tea and biscuits . And that's a no as well !

Hi Terry, yes looking today it is exactly 180 degrees out, my engineer said he can machine a new slot opposite in the wheel for me. Price of a cup of tea and a biscuit and a ride in the car, think better than getting my hands dirty and opening up a can of worms ( or wormgears) !

As I explained in my first reply. The steering box has to be opened up to allow the steering wheel, shaft and worm to be turned through 180 degrees.
He has the wheels aligned already. The drag link and steering arm remain in the same position central position.

I am not familiar with this era of Cord, so if I am way off base, somebody please tell me to shut up.
So in most cars I have worked on, the procedure would be to disconnect the drag link, turn the steering wheel all the way to the left, then count the turns as you turn the steering wheel all the way to the right. Then turn it back towards the left half the number of turns. That should set the steering box in the center. Then hopefully your steering wheel is right. If the steering wheel isn't right, then you need to make the adjustment inside the steering box. If the steering wheel is right, then you adjust the drag link length until it will fit into position with the wheels facing straightforward and the steering box centered.

I agree completely with Terry. Don't remove the woodruff key to reset the steering wheel.

My steering wheel was the same as yours. The only way to reset the position to get the correct Y formation is to take the side plate off the steering box and remove the cross shaft. Then you can turn the steering wheel to the correct position and refit the cross shaft.
I would not rely on the tapered fit, the key is there for safety.

So after setting toe and rechecking and rechecking need to reset steering wheel, it has always had a spoke directly facing upwards, not ideal. I removed the wheel and was faced with a woodruff key and was hoping for splines that I could just rotate round, is it safe to remove woodruff key and rely on the taper ? I cannot see any other way of making the adjustment. ( I have the steering rods set at the same length and the "V" central )
