Dismantling Locakable Front Door Handle

Reading this thread gave me the inspiration to have a look at my lock, after filing down the shaft and freeing off the siezed mechanism I luckily found a old key in my stash that fitted a treat. Drilled and put a pin in the shaft, now I can lock the car which is reassuring to say the least.

Thanks George for this great inside tip. Seeing a Front door pop open by who knows what especially a broken spring and the after math is a door crashing into the back door or worse. Breaking off just scare the hell out of me. My front doors will be locked while driving and the springs sure will be replaced.

Some advice re Cord front door locks; On a restoration the front door lock springs should be replaced. If this spring breaks the front door will open with disastrous results. Replacements are available .
When driving, it's a good habit to turn the handle to the lock position.

I wonder which was safer -- having the locking handle on the passenger side or designing the car with suicide doors?

Thanks George, I remember reading somewhere that is had to do with opening the passenger side door for the wife, girl friend or other female passenger then the driver could lock the car up and vice versa when opening the door for the lady.

The logic is that you lock your car while standing on the curb side, rather than on the traffic LH side , to be safe.

Do all cars not have a lock on the right hand lever then ? Even my 48 Ford truck has a lock on the right side only, you locked the driver side from inside, then slid over and got out the pass. side to the pavement and locked it from that side, well that was the idea anyway.

A. Very simple fix is just to drill a small hole in the square shaft and insert a cotter pin. Position the hole so that when you insert the cotter pin, you have ample tension on the spring and the disk that positions the spring. When you insert the cotter pin, bend back the two ends and trim. In 50 plus years, I’ve never had this fix fail.

Bill if it works.. Then fine. Many years ago I think it was Jime Obrien or Pat Leahy or Josh Malks found out that a GM clip worked great when the flat spring clips began to fall out of loose the flex in the spring.I do not know the year but if used it sure would make removing the handles easier they the two screwdrivers thru the two holes in the door.

I also had an issue on my Westchester with the crimps on the locking handle shaft not fully holding the sprung components of the handle base. I took an alternate approach to fixing the issue. I used a piece of wire similar to baling wire and wrapped it around the shaft so that when I twisted it tight it would grab the crimped corners of the shaft and hold the spring assembly in place. If this does not seem elegant enough for a fix that cannot be seen then I also think that it would be possible to find an external circlip of the appropriate size that would do the job. Both approaches avoiding the need to drill a hole in the shaft.

I believe the door handles fit both sides and front or back doors but. There is a different length square shank on the convertibles compared to any sedan. We can cut down a convertible door handle to fit any sedan. But adding lenght is a little harder. Also some owners have found if the handle is not lined up we can twist the shank in a vice to gake it look correct. Adding some heat carefully to the twist area to be done with caution. Note to everyone. A wet shop rag protects the chrome.

Hello gents,

Thanks kindly for all your responses - this has been most interesting to read. I’m the owner of 812 1600K, the Cord that (hopefully one day!) this door handle will go on.

Out of curiosity, how rare are the lockable handles?

One last point. I remember reading that the lockable handle was fitted to the RH door on Cords. The small pin hole in the handle would then be facing down.
Funny that it was not fitted to the driver's side instead.

One word of caution on using the pin - be carful not to make the pin too large. I have seen the shafts break at the pin due to the thinner section and too much stress.

Wyn, no apologies necessary. I looked for a roll pin and not finding one realised your handle must have been modified. The mod works so I will be talking with my mate who owns the handle.
Thanks also to Jim and Gary.

Jim, You are absolutely right! I did that modification myself to all my handles when I re-chromed them. I totally forgot! My apologies Terry. To take of the escutcheon, you have to file or grind off the bent edges of the square shaft.

What Jim has posted is correct. But it would seem to me this is something that helps compared to the original crimped corners.

There is a pin in the square shaft that holds the spring and end plate in place. After knocking out the pin you can remove the escutcheon. Then with the key inserted, you can insert a small punch in the small hole you referred to and holding the key you can wiggle out the lockset.

Dismantling Locakable Front Door Handle was created by Terry Cockerell
A friend loaned me his extremely rare lockable front door handle. I am looking at dismantling it in order to make a new one for my sedan which has none.
In the first picture there is a very small hole in the tubular section of the handle about 3/8" back from the handle lever.
I assume a pin can be inserted in this hole to depress part of the lock for removal.
I do not want to damage the handle . Any assistance with a dismantling procedure would be greatly appreciated.
