Tom, I think your renumbered 36 would have originally come with the earlier style generator so it wouldn't have needed the wiring hole that was put in for the later style GCO generators.

My 1937 (renumbered 36) phaeton also has no hole in the firewall in that location. I will not be drilling one there.

The about comment is true. On any supercharged dual point distributor it was too crowded for the capacitor to be located inside so it was placed on the outside of the distributor body.

The cord had a radio. The 6V positive generator had a lot of whines that could be suppressed at the regulator you may see one on the outside of the ignition distributor as an attempt to suppress copper wire spark noise as there were no common carbon ignition wires and radio suppressor plugs. there is also one inside the distributor to control point arcing.

Steve are there any of the Accepted Judges in your area ?
Rather than dismiss the way your car is, it should at least be investigated.
We should not be turning a blind eye to what is actually there.

Steve, if you want it to be closer to original you should add it. You can argue that it wasn't that way on your car, but after 80 years it's impossible to prove that was case. You are better off to go with what everyone knows is correct. Also the radio capacitor should be mounted on voltage reg as shown. Again, I can't say for sure they weren't ever located on the generator on 812 cars, but I do know that the way I have shown it is considered "correct".

That's what I would have thought but it clearly didn't and I am not really sure if I should add it now.
It looks like you have a capacitor mounted next to your regulator. What would that be for?

I have 812 S/C Beverly 310112 S and it has a hole in the firewall for the voltage regulator wiring right where it should be. The photo below is from my phaeton, but the Beverly has the hole in the exact same location. I would think yours originally would have also had a hole there.

Hi Terry,
Checked the inside of the firewall and it is as smooth as a babies bottom.
No hole ever.

Hi Gary,
My car came in boxes with a lot of the work done, not all to my satisfaction.
The previous owner seemed to have a penchant for modernizing the car which I wish he hadn't.
My generator is GCO 4804 A and has two brushes.
To my surprise, I opened the regulator and found that it is totally solid state. (Modernization, Why?)
I have to assume that this will work for my generator or he would not have purchased it so now the question does it need to be polarized or not?
Steve
PS: Hope your recovery is going well. My wife joined the zipper club three years ago and feels better than she had in years.

Steve, can you examine the other side of the firewall?
If the hole was there and filled in you would have a better idea of what to do.

Sadly without knowing the voltage regulator numbers the best I can tell you is its wrong for the GCO generator. The two charge voltage regulators were only on the three brush generators as I have shared. The Autolite GCO generator is a Shunt type generator. If you have no background on who or when the GCO and the two charge regulator were installed or did this car come in boxes. Its nearly impossible to know whats been done in or by an earlier owner that had good intentions. The GCO 4804-A shunt type generator is recognized as the go to generator for any 37 Cord. They are very hard to find and "if" you find one its going to cost at least $3000.00. The 36 810 GAR4630 with top mounted regulator is about $1500.00. They are very expensive. If I didn't have Coronary triple bypass a month ago I would have probably 4 GCO generators by now made up. They have new everything. New sealed ball bearing both front and rear. Originally an oil wick to a bushing oiled the brush end but did it poorly. Mine have sealed ball bearing never needing oil. The body winding's are new as is the armature and shaft. The front and rear cover plates are new cast by me. So is the SP263 pulley.I have so many spare parts to choose from. I usually only buy new parts. All the brushes and the brush springs are new. I make all the brush plate rivets custom to my needs. Essentially these are completely new vintage GCO4804-A generators far Superior to the original design.

Thanks Terry,
I am not going to dwell on it.
It will be a lot easier to drill the hole later if I decide to go that way than to fill the hole in if I decide later that I don' want it.

Hi Gary,
According to your records, my generator is CCO 4804A. The 8 I included was questionable at best. My fire wall was drilled for the four hole mount regulator which I do not have.
The regulator I have is a three hole mount regulator and there is the extra hole in the firewall for mounting that a s well.
The regulator looks to have been professionally restored to a very high level.
The AutoLite tag reads two charge regulator but has no model #, Amps, or serial # engraved on the tag
The regulator is 6V and cuts out at 7.3V.
Based on all this there should have been a hole cut into the firewall for the wires, which there was not.
There is a hole drilled behind the generator for the wires to exit the engine compartment.
I am inclined not to drill the hole, what do you think?
Thanks
Steve

Steve I cannot answer your question as I am not an expert on the generators used by Cords.
If the hole was not in the firwall then you could assume it had the early type generator with the regulator mounted on the generator.
The Factory Service Bulletins show how to install a regulator on the firewall and where to drill the hole for the cables.
To tell you the truth I am disappointed at the lack of contributions in the Forums considering the number of people in the club.

Thanks Terry,
I do have that drawing from Stan but the question is weather I should drill the hole or not. ie Why wasn't the hole drilled in the first place.

I am not sure that I should drill the whole just because that's how most of the other vehicles with the firewall mounted regulator were done that way.
Thanks,
Steve

810 Cords had two different three brush generators. They are the GAR 4630 with the top mount tc 4302a regulator. The 812 also had two different generators. The GCO4804A with voltage reguator VRB4008C. This regulator had the hard to find 4 hole mounting base. Then there was the GBR 3603A with the two charge top mounted TC 4306C. My 37 Cord made in Junary 1st thru the 16 teenth is correct with both types generators. I can't prove that the end of the line Cords in 37 had the two charge GBR 4603 A two charge regulator. Only one club member has told me this. Satan may know. What I'm positive of is these are the generators and the 37 car is widely accepted with the GCO generator. Here is proof from my 8 inch thick Autolite generator master catalog that tels me what every Autolite generator fits.

GENERATOR/REGULATOR QUESTION was created by A.S. KOLLER
My 812 Supercharged Beverly is a late production model with SN# 32439 S and Engine # FC 3179.
I have not been able to determine the body number.

The Generator is Model # CCO 48048 A ( I think, very hard to read the tag.) with an external regulator.

What perplexes me is that there is no hole in the fire wall by the regulator.

To drill or not to drill, that is the question?

Thanks

Steve
