I totally agree with you but I would have made the modifications if my fenders weren't painted,
As it stands now it is a moot point
Best regards
Steve

The Hume Highway is the busiest road in Australia running between Sydney and Melbourne. In the past before it was duplicated road workers along its 550 mile length spent their working lives filling up the same pot holes which were blown out at night by trucks. It's almost a pleasure to drive on these days but it still is not a good as your highways.

We covered a lot of miles in various states and found the roads to be excellent.
In Richmond, Virginia we saw one pot hole ............... I was tempted to photograph it.
Just kidding however your roads are like black velvet.

The modifications that you showed are the ones that I remember reading about
but Jim O'Brien hit the nail on the head. My fenders are already painted.
Yhanks again

Yes I did reinforce the support on my front fenders on my sedan and never had a problem. I haven't gotten to the fenders on my phaeton yet.
CORDially,
Jim

If your fenders are painted it's too late. The fenders have a tendancy to crack where the bracket that is over the wheel well (and even the bracke at the rear) meets the fender. The fenders are heavy and they tend to bounce around going down the road. Over the year the metal will crack between teh brace and the fender. The cracking usually starts at the inner lip and works around to the outside and up the fender.
What the old timers did was weld a piece of tubing (some would cut the tube in half length wise) inside the curve around the wheel well. This would spread out the forces and prevent the cracking.

Tom Georgeson told me his adjustable struts ended up putting too much localised stress into the fenders which caused cracks to develop around the headlight area. Moonshadow's supports seem to be the best solution.

I think from memory Moonshadow has an extra flat bar welded across the front of the chassis to which gussets are bolted at the ends. These gussets were welded to the front fenders. This gave the fenders a lot of extra support.

I will hopefully be ready to install my front fenders on my 812 in a few weeks and I recall reading several articles in the News Letters many years ago about several modifications that were made to improve the support of the front fenders.
Can any of you shed some light on this topic an advise which was the best fix and how to accomplish it?
If I am going to do it the time is now.
Thanks
Steve
