TERRY,
I totally agree with you but I would have made the modifications if my fenders weren't painted,
As it stands now it is a moot point
Best regards
Steve

Can you send some pictures ................................. please?
The Hume Highway is the busiest road in Australia running between Sydney and Melbourne. In the past before it was duplicated road workers along its 550 mile length spent their working lives filling up the same pot holes which were blown out at night by trucks. It's almost a pleasure to drive on these days but it still is not a good as your highways.

The pot holes are so large in Philadelphia that there are people living in them!

You ought to come to Australia to see lumps and bumps. These days the roads are getting better. Americans on vacation have been doing road works here, we need more of them.

Steve with the roads we saw during our visits to America I'm wonderfing why the front fenders need extra supports at all.
We covered a lot of miles in various states and found the roads to be excellent.
In Richmond, Virginia we saw one pot hole ............... I was tempted to photograph it.
Just kidding however your roads are like black velvet.

I want to thank for their replies to my question on the Cord front fender modifications.
The modifications that you showed are the ones that I remember reading about
but Jim O'Brien hit the nail on the head. My fenders are already painted.
Yhanks again

Mike - Are you calling me an "old timer"???
Yes I did reinforce the support on my front fenders on my sedan and never had a problem. I haven't gotten to the fenders on my phaeton yet.
CORDially,
Jim

Steve,
If your fenders are painted it's too late. The fenders have a tendancy to crack where the bracket that is over the wheel well (and even the bracke at the rear) meets the fender. The fenders are heavy and they tend to bounce around going down the road. Over the year the metal will crack between teh brace and the fender. The cracking usually starts at the inner lip and works around to the outside and up the fender.

What the old timers did was weld a piece of tubing (some would cut the tube in half length wise) inside the curve around the wheel well. This would spread out the forces and prevent the cracking.

I found the article referred to earlier.
Tom Georgeson told me his adjustable struts ended up putting too much localised stress into the fenders which caused cracks to develop around the headlight area. Moonshadow's supports seem to be the best solution.

Gary quite a few years ago Tom Georgeson did an extensive article on this very subject.
I think from memory Moonshadow has an extra flat bar welded across the front of the chassis to which gussets are bolted at the ends. These gussets were welded to the front fenders. This gave the fenders a lot of extra support.
Do a search in old newsletters.

I'm not aware of any modifications but sure will be following this. What I do know is you must level the car frame. Then when you attach the fender arms those also must be level to each side. Not how this is done is not something I have tried yet. I know the fender mounting holes in the fenders is very generous. But "finding" where they belong is nothing I can confirm. I suspect once one side is found to be correct. you can take that fender off and then locate the other fender arm correctly. then install that fender and see if it lines up with the holes in the splash panel. I don't recall how my Dad and I installed the front fenders in 1966. I was 15 years old...

FRONT FENDER MODIFICATIONS was created by A.S. KOLLER
H Guys,

I will hopefully be ready to install my front fenders on my 812 in a few weeks and I recall reading several articles in the News Letters many years ago about several modifications that were made to improve the support of the front fenders.

Can any of you shed some light on this topic an advise which was the best fix and how to accomplish it?

If I am going to do it the time is now.

Thanks

Steve
