As Roads2run suggested I got back the cap from powder coating and it certainly looks great, especially underneath! It should last because I don't see any bare metal exposed; even the copper piece that locks it in place looks well coated !
If any problems uccur, I'll post an update otherwise maybe problem resolved!
Cheers all!
Aris

Well on second thought I checked it out and even though the grease did seem to offer some protection, I am sending it for powder coating as Roads2run suggests. I'll do the whole cap in black, top and underneath and see how that goes, will post results!

Powder coating might help preserve an original cap. Tom Hartz

Caps are VERY hard to find, so cherrish the next one in any way you can protect it.

You want the good old fashioned green antifreeze and you may want to read up on "oats" regarding antifreeze. I have been buying NAPA 50/50 for pre 1995 cars.

Also, NAPA carries a water pump lubricant that is the old fashioned white milky stuff - no harm in adding water pump lube to the antifreeze.

Keep in mind that there are frw places in the United States that are exempt from the periodic freezing temperatures and it does not take that long to freeze water.

I have been using grease on the underside of the radiator cap for several years. If grease has thinned, I just put another coat on. It has worked very well, and no new rust has appeared. I don’t want to overthink the problem. The rest of the radiator is just fine.

I have heard of some cooling/heating system corrosion problems being caused by electrolysis and not acidity of coolant. This happens when the corroded item is not properly grounded. A voltmeter between the battery ground and coolant may show a very small voltage if electrolysis is happening.

Tim.
There must be an underlying problem to cause the corrosion on the underside of the radiator cap like Aris has experienced. The grease must wash off the cap over time exposing the metal again. The subject of corrosion inhibitors vs anti freeze coolants really opens up a large can of worms.

I’m using store bought 50/50 mix of coolant and water. Working just fine for 25 years so far.

Ari: I had the same problem. An easy fix: clean or sand blast the affected area until the rust is gone. Then apply a light coating of light grease onto the whole area. Done.
CORDially, Tim.

Aris perhaps you should be using a corrosion inhibitor instead of antifreeze?
The corrosion is severe. I know it can get cold in Athens during winter however you Cord is stored in a garage. How cold does it get in the garage?
Antifreeze coolants as far as I am aware do not provide corrosion protection.
You need to do some more investigation on available engine coolants.

Yes, This is the correct cap. Are you using any antifreeze?

Hi All!

Please confirm that the cap in the pic is the original one for us. I have replaced it at least twice but it is only a matter of time before it rusts badly away.

Are there any correct replacements? Or solutions like chroming or else?

Thanks Ahead
Aris
