Gary, I don't think the convertible doors are thicker. The door handle position is a set a lot lower where the door is wider. Where the sedan door handles are fitted the door is narrower.

Argeed Cliff. My comments were to show the user has options. I personally can TIG weld and some fine grinding can't tell it was ever "added on too". I like to reverse engineer "things".My issue is to reverse engineer an outside door handle I have to destroy it. At this time I'm not willing to ruin something that could help someone complete their car.

Gary, no need to take out the short shaft. Leave as is and just weld on a short extension on existing short shaft to make a convertible handle. Over the years I’ve done this a few times.

I'm told convertible doors are thicker so they need a longer shaft. But the outside handle is the same across the open and closed cars.Getting the short shaft out of the handle is an issue but a good TIG welder can do ANYTHING.....

It’s easy enough to either cut down the longer shaft out to weld a extension onto the shorter shaft if that’s what you need.

Thank you for the explanation. In that case it would seem that they likely are not interchangeable.

The only difference is the length of the square shaft

Hi Gary,
What are the differences between the open and closed car handles? I am curious to see if my cars have the correct handles.
Thank you.
Bill

Sadly I don't Terry.I have a couple of these spares now. There is a difference between an open and closed car outside door handles besides one having a key lock.

A good find Gary.
Do you happen to have a spare one with the locking mechanism?

Today This came in the mail. Even though I knew what I was looking at I still was wondering if a Cord trunk handle was coming. So as it turns out this really is an outside door handle and NOT a trunk handle. Enjoy the pics.
