Terry - There are no holes in the floorboard so you can soak your feet on the way home. The heat off the engine and from the resonator heat the water so you have hot water for soaking your feet. THe down side is the windshield fogs up so you can't wee where you are going!

The windshields have a one piece seal that fits into a groove that runs around the perimeter. They don't tend to be a perfect seal however Jim O'Brien wrote an article on how to improve the seal. Petroleum jelly is smeared over the paint work, the windshields are lifted up and a bead of black silicone is applied along the seal at the top. Then the windshield is closed to allow the silicone to go off. Later the petroleum jelly is wiped off and the arear cleaned up. This should stop further leaks. I think the article was in last years newsletter.

After seeing these hidden cowl holes, easily overlooked when windshield is closed, I may cover the holes with metal insulation tape to prevent leaks. There is also a rubber molded trim connected to the inside bottom of the windshield <that is missing on this car> that may be to divert water. There is little information or diagrams on the disassembly and parts of the windshield frame. My concern was to replace the waterproof foam seal on the cowl vent seal channel. This seemed to be the area that rain would leak in and moisture would find its way to inside of the delicate radio box.

Pete the answer is obvious, they were is such a hurry to get them out the Factory door they just forgot. When you get wet feet driving a Cord it just makes you remember what a fabulous car that you are driving.
Besides Jim O'Brien's trick of running a silicone bead around the seal area solves the problem. I rode motorcycles in the rain for years, got wet feet too and kept going back.

I thought they were drilled to save weight.

I thought the holes were evenly spread out to make sure the water that comes through around the seal was evenly spread out so there was no dry spot for your legs and feet.

The hole in the windshield area Gary is refering to is so when you open the windshield the car whistles as it goes down the road. If the Cord is happy it whistles a nice tune, if the Cord is not happy it is very annoying.

I'm sure some of you have experienced this!

Here's a picture of what I asked about. I believe Terry has confirmed what I thought.

The holes Gary is referring to are drilled. There is a row of them behind the bottom edge of each windshield on sedans. These holes are not provided in convertible cars. They are for supplementary ventilation. The idea was that you could just open the windshields slightly and fresh air would enter through the holes and come out under the dashboard. Only sedans have hinged windshields that are controlled by hand knobs in the top corners of the dash panel.

These holes appear to be punched or drilled out. They are ONLY across the bottom of the windshield opening. They are about 1/2 inch diameter. I will post a picture of them later today.

On my car the holes are for the windshield frame mounting bolts. The holes are about 1" in diameter and are very crudely cut. Some look like they were cut with a grinder. The factory obviously did not use a template to get the exact location for the bolts. As a result large washers must be used under the holes to mount the windshield frame.

Don't know about Cords but other cars have drain holes in cowl vent area with tubes to take the water some where besides on your lap.

Windshield seal area was created by 1748 S
What are the holes in the cowl seal area across the cowl under the windshield seal? Are they for air flow to direct fresh air to the foot wells?
