The harder the babbit the more technique sensitive it is to solder. I had some hard babbit fail because it was improperly soldered. This failed babbit was NOT done by Paul's.

I use No.2 babbit which is also called diesel babbit. It is about 92% tin with copper and antimony making up the rest (I forget the percentages). The softer grades of babbit contain various percentages of lead.

There is more than one kind of babbit. some softer and some harder. Builder seem to have varying opinions as which is best.

My engine machinists has had excellent results using Paul’s rod and bearing for pouring Babbitt for rods and cam bearings. There in Parkville, Mo.

The aaca has some good discussion on the pros and cons of babbit vs bronze
Wear caused from dirt is a concern. I have never tried to use bronze. I also have never had a babbit failure. Todays babbit has better properties then that of the 30's

Mike, Yes new email - the old one (cordman) is no longer. Also I no longer have a land line so you have to call my cell phone.
George, for the bronze bearings do you need to open up the clearances to account for the difference in expansion? or what?

In the past I have always used the old bearing liners and had them re-poured with fresh babbit. The poured liners come back in the rough and then lined bored once installed. Be very careful with bronze as the heat expansion can be an issue. I have seen them fuse to the cam

Hi Grant,
The original cam bearings were poured babbit. Today some people use bronze bearings. They have to be custom made. If you want a set let me know, I have to make a set for my engine so I can make two sets.
I have lot of extra engine parts (as well as other Cord Parts). What do you need? You can PM me or email me at [email protected]
