Mike, I would be disappointed if you didn't comment! Besides who ever listens to me?

Sorry to disappoint you Jim. No Comment! I have always used liquid soap as well, but will try K-Y next time, good idea.

The best lubricant I have found for installing rubber is K-Y Jelly. It doen't affect the rubber, doesn't stain anything and washes off with water. I keep a tube in my shop on the shelf with other lubricants.

Yes I know this leaves things WIDE open for comments.

Hi George, The seam has been flattened at the valve stem area on my caps as well. I looked closely at two of my old hub caps and it looks as though someone (not me!) glued them on with some sort of black glue. While it may be an easy way out it's not the way I want to do things. So, tomorrow morning I break out the screwdriver and vice grips. Many thanx!

Bill I did this job recently on new caps. I found that the seam had been flattened near the valve stem area for some reason--the most difficult part of the work. Using a fairly large slot screw driver did not injure the rubber. Push it in and have a vise grip plier ready to pinch it. Push the rubber in all around until you get to the end and push it well into seam and again flatten with the vise grip. Possibly you need to trim to length .

I have always used liquid dish soap for a lubricant to help mounting motorcycle tires on rims. I was recently told not to use it as it is corrosive and will cause rusting on the inside of the rims. I don't know if this is true but I am going to find out before I again use it for mounting tires or for the future job of installing the rubber in my new Cord hub caps.

Hub Cap Rubber was created by wcoye
Tomorrow is "install the rubber gasket in my hub caps" day, a local holiday. I am asking for suggestions of how to get the bead into seat securely.
I have laid in a supply of talcum powder and liquid dish soap to lubricate the bead. Any other sage suggestion? What tool should I use to push on the bead. I imagine using a small screw driver is only going to cause me major grief.
