I agree with that George, packing pieces of thick cardboard like the firewall pad was made of were used to fill in any small gaps.

Terry From what I can find the factory wood shop made these frames but when they were installed some needed shims. My 810 used a number of them to make it fit the metal work.

Your frame can be used for templates. I used a band saw to cut each separate piece then glued and screwed them together just like the original.

thanks for the reply. I have removed the wood around the trunk but in looking at your photos it looks like this is new wood. Do you have the jigs to make or did you have someone make this for you? I need to replace some of the wood or have a new one made. I also need the piece on the phaeton that goes around the rear tub above the trunk piece.

thanks

Yes, all of the screws and nails are in the flat section where the rubber seal sits.
The rubber seal covers all of the rough stuff.
The attached pictures show the wooden frame assembly for a Westchester.
The layout would be similar for a phaeton.

I said U shaped bracket but I should have said L shaped bracket. It’s screwed from the outside side of side pieces and bottom side of bottom piece

Besides the wood screws and nails, the side pieces of wood are attached to the bottom piece of wood with a U shaped brace on each side and I believe you spotted the braces at the top.

the only place I saw Screws and nails was on the lip where the trunk lid sits. is that the only place that it is attached? I have removed some of them but it doesn't seem to move at all. The upper wood I do see how it would come out.

The wooden frame around the trunk opening is nailed and screwed to the body.
The sedans are done the same way. You can see the holes around the perimeter of the opening which is covered over with a rubber seal.
In the attached picture the wood had already been removed.

Wood removal in Phaeton was created by rhauser
I'm still tearing my phaeton done to have the body dipped but I need to remove all the wood so that it doesn't get destroyed. I'm not going to dip the truck lip or upper deck so I'm not asking about those parts . the question is how does the wood in the rear of the car (Primarily around the trunk opening and where the hinges attach for the trunk lid on back deck) attach so that I can remove them. I think I have the wood on the upper side where the hinges attach for the deck lid but I haven't figured out how to remove the wood around the trunk opening. is it glued in or am I missing something.
