If someone is interested in adding a dip stick to check the grease level in transmission as posted years ago in the newsletter, I will have one for sale along with a Car full of Cord parts at Hershey.

I have a wire with a 1 Inch 90 degree bend in it to stick in trans. etc to use as a makeshift dip stick ,if you will, to check levels, if your little finger won't fit.

From under the car, on the side of the transmission on the drivers side there is a square headed pipe plug. When you remove the plug, the transmission fluid should be at that level. You can put your little finger in the hole to see if the level is just below the opening.

The owner's manual says 5 quarts for the transmission. I've put 5 in but when I eyeball down the fill hole I see nothing. This right?

Unless you have a steering gear converted to modern seals you will probably find the SPO-277 on the floor in the morning.

Yes, I have some Penrite that I have used on other cars. That's what I was planning on using until I thought I read someone saying the SPO-277 should be used. Thanks!

I consulted my Cord Owners Companion about the steering gear oil and it appears that the SPO-277 may be OK. Attached is the information in the book which indicates anything from SAE 110 to SAE 250 gear oil for the steering gear. The SAE 140 SPO-277 seems like it should be OK as it is in the range If you want to go with a heavier gear oil then the Lubriplate SPO-299 which is SAE 250 should be good. Sorry about the orientations of the pictures if they are off, I am not sure how to fix them here. .

Look up PENRITE LUBRICANTS for steering gears. It's a heavy oil made for steering gears.

I found this oil in UK, Millers oil 140W and compatible with yellow metals :

Millers Gear Oil Vintage Green 140 GL1 - 1 litre

But as it's a GL1, I have doubts that it's enough in term of EP ? GL4 is much better on that side, but it's never written that it's compatible with yellow metals.

On the other side, the german importer of Lubriplate answered my email and I am now in contact of the shop responsible for France, Belgium and Holland.

Antwerp Lion Oil Works NV

They are selling by 16Kg units for 219€ + transport. With transport, Millers 140W or Lubriplate SPO 277 will be more or less at the same price per litre.

I found the following information about gear oils on the Rymax Lubricants web site. Rymax looks to be based in Holland, you might try looking at their products to find something suitable. I found GL-4 gear oils in 85W-140 weight on their site.

This gear oil should be available in Europe. Just ask you locale lubrication outlet for 140 SAE Gear oil that is safe for copper, and copper alloy bearings. It will probably not be Lubriplate brand but that won't make a difference. It really helps when people ask for assistance that they tell us where they are located.

Yes, avoid GL-5 oils ! GL-1 is probably the most appropriate for old gearboxes, GL-4 for differentials.

Yes, they have one German distributor for the "rest of the world" with a website from the 80s , available only in german for the oil part... I will restart from the specifications of that oil to find an european equivalent. We use to have that problem even with more moderns cars, with oils brands and types that are not available from one continent to the other (both way).

I found another friend in Belgium owning a Phaeton SC but his car is serviced in UK. Only few Cord's are registered in Belgium. That make the challenge even more exciting :-)

I used the search engine on this site and found jim mentioning 140 wt gear oil. You may have better luck using the search than me. Its not a very good search system but its all we have. I recall Josh malks used the Lubrilate 277 also but maybe a search will bring that up too.

Hi Thierry, here is the gear oil that was recommended to me when I got my first Cord a couple of years ago. It is Lubriplate SPO 277 which I was able to purchase online and have shipped to my home. I believe that this is the gear oil that Jim Obrien uses as well.

Best regards,
Bill
