That is an air deflector, not a dust shield, just so you know....

They were fabric, some had as much as 1/2 inch hanging out the end (s).

The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

You will never see the bulk of them - I am fond of glass setting tape. Something in the brown to black range is fine enough, but yes they appear to lean toward black-ish.

Most of the scraps of webbing I've found on Auburn frames is black. Is that correct? Most are oil or tar impregnated so I can't tell. One scrap appears brown in the middle.

All dust shields are semi-gloss black. There is thin webbing between the frame and the dust shields.

Top of Page 83 in 1934 parts book lists 4 pieces of anti squeak for front dust shield and 4 pieces for the side "shield" s?.

Attached are a couple of pictures of an Auburn frame that I don't think the front dust shield has ever been off of. Note the black webbing peaking out around the edges.

Mine only looks nicer as it is painted in gloss black and that is a double edged sword as I am not sure what finish would be better long term for cleanliness (what does not show water marks and dirt). The original finish was chassis or satin black. As to the webbing - I do not know, but yes, dad's 35 has webbing and the other two cars did not, but then again I was not the first people to touch them. I like to use glass setting tape as webbing.

Look in the 34 parts book, page 22, there is a blow-up diagram . 34,35,36 are all the same.

John yours looks nicer! Should it have body webbing under it like mine? You can see it at the front corners.

It also helps to seal the sides of the radiator, although that is not orig. I used pipe insulation slipped over the sides.

I can photograph, though not heading that way for a few days - if someone can beat me to the punch, please go right ahead.

As a sidenote - the pan in the bottom of the grill must be in place prior to assembly of the grill/hood and is necessary for proper cooling of the car (no exceptions).

Anyone have any pictures of engine dust shield's on left side of engine and top cover behind grill shell? I am restoring a 1935 Auburn 851 Salon Phaeton Sedan and its missing the dust shield.
