The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

My 8-105 has about 92k on the odometer. The differential seems to be fine--I believe it remains in the low ratio and am not sure if or when it has ever been taken out of the low ratio. I'm also not sure that the differential on the car is original. With the rear wheels off the ground, the drive shaft is easily turned by hand. When is is done, the number of revolutions of the drive shaft produces the number of tire turns that suggests the low ratio spec for a 12-165 model. Makes me wonder if the original was replaced by a 12-165 model diff.

If you have a 34, 850, 35 851, or 36 852, then you also have the problem, but there tends to be more supply of back axles and most people have been getting along via welding, but on occasion there is a car that just cannot be welded on again or .... As mentioned, there is a project in the works and optimally the price should be probably in the $500 or so range for the gear (what I have known people striving for via other gear projects and they faced same issues of people not wanting to pay much more than that), but I think they were having trouble at $1,000 or so now a (or so was the case when I last heard about the project). A very worthy project though as repairs are just that - repairs.

David Yancy is looking to reproduce gears - 1-916-505-4692
The only problem is most people do not drive their cars and as a result he is having trouble finding enough people to get pricing down - this is an expensive proposition.
