Randy,
Thank you for checking on that. Lycoming drawings? Wow! Not that I really need them, but are those publicly available to guys like me? All I have is an illustrated parts manual for 1930 Auburns. It shows some engine parts but not all. Mine is a 1929 and the parts manual isn't illustrated.

Yes, mostly a Ford shop, though they get plenty of other make engines in too.

John, just to make sure we're talking about the same shop, it's Ron's Machine Shop in Shandon, Ohio (near Hamilton, OH) NW of Cincinnati. This is my first experience with them. Very nice people who seem to know what they are doing. But just don't be in a hurry to get your engine back because you're in for a long wait.

Anyway, if anyone has an example picture of what one of these baffles looks like, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Bruce

The shop you speak of in Cincinnati does nice work - they have bailed me out of trouble a few times now.

Randy, I counted 17 broken bolts still in the block.

Thanks Randy. Do you have any pictures of what one of the baffles look like? I'm wondering if I can fabricate a baffle out of stainless steel sheet. I assume the goal his to get the water to flow around the back of each cylinder wall and back out.

Regarding the screws, all of them or nearly all of them broke. He's going to drill them out and install heli-coils.

Yes there is usually a water baffle attached to the water jacket side plate. How did you miss breaking all the screws from breaking or did you. R

Auburn 680 Water Passages was created by IndycarBruce
I'm having my 1929 Auburn 680 engine rebuilt to the short block stage by a machine shop north of Cincinnati who specializes in Ford Model A & T engines and they pour their own babbitt. I had originally taken it to another shop, but it quickly became apparent I had made a mistake. Anyway, this past spring, the shop in Ohio had rebuilt a 1930 Auburn 6-cylinder which is virtually the same as mine. On the 1930, he said there were distribution tubes or baffles behind the water jacket cover. Mine has none. He thinks if there used to be some sort of water distribution behind the cover, then either it never got put back in after a previous rebuild, or it rusted away. He thinks there should be something there. I'm attaching pictures to show what it looks like behind the cover.

Should my engine have water distribution tubes or baffles behind the water jacket cover? If so, what does it look like?
