Another possible cause, if the plunger wasn't lubricated during assembly it might have taken some time for oil to reach the rubbing face.

This plunger is spring loaded in earlier models and designed to remove all camshaft end play. If same on your model the plunger might be jammed.

Auburn 8/105 CAM Shaft Plunger and new random squeak was created by curtiss
I just got the fresh 8/105 motor installed and running and the first 10 mins were great but now I get a random squeak at idle from the front of the engine so It appears to be coming near the front cover area. I unhooked the belt and still has the squeak with no fan or generator turning.
I am reading in the manual on a Auburn 8/105 the cam shaft play is taken up by the plunger, I assume the plunger is the bump on the end of the cam shaft bolt, correct? Is that adjustable in any way?
It may just take some time for oil to get up there to lube it up.
