If timing chain is installed correctly The valve timing on camshaft is automatically correct. It has nothing to do with valve clearance settings.

The car was running find when I took it apart (other than the broke ring it had) and the picture below is how the old one was installed, it counts 12 teeth between the marks but the attached manual says it should be 13.

Do I install the new one the way it came out or do I do it as the manual says? What happens if it is a tooth off?

Can someone comment on why this chain does not fill the complete gears and why it does not have a center guide like any other Whitney timing chain? Am wondering if this chain can handle the valve load to open and close valves.

I wondered about that and why the chain so narrow compared to the sprockets
when I first saw the pic. What will keep the chain on the sprocket?
Randy and Curt please fill us in.

If you look at the picture of the chain you can see a kind of double sprocket on the camshaft. I am guessing that the chain has center links every so many links. Never seen a chain without center links. May by we can get Curtiss to post a picture of the old chain

timing chain

The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
