There are 12 teeth between punch marks . The picture Curtiss was looking at was penciled in.

I suggest contacting Frank Cek. He and his son Jim are the premier engine builders for the club. Ask him how many teeth there are between the punch marks. I supply new chains as pictured above.

If you look at the picture of the chain you can see a kind of double sprocket on the camshaft. I am guessing that the chain has center links every so many links. Never seen a chain without center links. May by we can get Curtiss to post a picture of the old chain

I wondered about that and why the chain so narrow compared to the sprockets
when I first saw the pic. What will keep the chain on the sprocket?
Randy and Curt please fill us in.

The car was running find when I took it apart (other than the broke ring it had) and the picture below is how the old one was installed, it counts 12 teeth between the marks but the attached manual says it should be 13.

Do I install the new one the way it came out or do I do it as the manual says? What happens if it is a tooth off?

Can someone comment on why this chain does not fill the complete gears and why it does not have a center guide like any other Whitney timing chain? Am wondering if this chain can handle the valve load to open and close valves.

If timing chain is installed correctly The valve timing on camshaft is automatically correct. It has nothing to do with valve clearance settings.

Not valve clearance, but valve timing. Two different things. Valve clearance has little to do with timing chain. Valve timing has everything to do with the timing chain. A little change in a word makes all the difference.

Curtiss If you are 100 percent sure that there was only twelve links between Cam and Crank gear marks I would put it back that way. As Ivor shows in a previous post it also showed 12 links in between . I have a 1933 Motors manual and it also says 12 link pins between punch marks. As for setting the valve clearance, It really has nothing to do with the timing chain marks. If chain is put on as it is supposed to be you can do all the settings later.
Hope this helps Terry

More information, I notice that "Motors" state 0.012" valve clearance for setting vale timing on the 8-105 not 0.010" , attached is a simple check using the number of teeth on the flywheel, Note also they state 12 links between punch marks.

Better image I hope, Valve timing should also be in the 8-105 handbook if you have one.

Hello Curtiss, To set your mind at ease I recommend you check the actual valve timing as it is important it be correct for your model. It is easy to do if you have the head off and with a magnetic base dial indicator or cigarette paper under the valve head you can check when the valve starts to open. To do this you first need to set the valve clearance to 0.010" on say number one cylinder (note this is not the running clearance) then check the actual timing as per the chart attached. For your 8-105 It looks like it should be Intake open 5 deg before UDC and Close 40 deg after LDC. Exhaust opens 50 deg before LDC and closes 10 deg after UDC. Good luck.
