The manual says anything more than .005 should be tightened up.

Thank you for the Info. I'm going to make a new part to retain the Lip seal. I think 005 would work on the end play. This I believe is for Expansion when the rear end gets warm so a few thou loose would be better than tight.

The specs. for the 35-36 Auburn are .003 to .005 end play measured with a dial indicator. Don't know if it is the same for 32. I measured the bore and housing size and used a lip seal. You may have to fabricate a collar for the OD. Both sides do not have the same size on my car so be sure and measure both.

Could someone help me out with my rear axle seals? I am doing my brakes and I have a lot of grease in the drums. So I took apart the rear brake plate assembly and found some shims and a tattered seal. Is this supposed to be a leather seal or rubber? Can it be replaced with a lip seal? The shims I imagine are to set the axle bearing thrust play. Does anyone know the spec in axle thrust so I can make sure it is shimmed right? Thank you for all your help.
