8-105 - Strange slits cut into lower side skirts of Pistons????

As mentioned earlier, it is for the skirt to expand.
Our friend, Mr. Zollner, had not yet invented the "Barrel curved" Piston.

This is starting to make more sense now. As I look at an old set of pistons that came out of my old spare engine and could be original they have a lot of open space around the lower skirt.

Merry Christmas . The factory used them to allow for expansion so the skirt hot would not score to the cylinder wall. R

We finally got to pulling the engine and taking it apart tonight in the 1933 8-105.

I found each of the pistons we labeled .060 over and they had a hole drilled in the skirt along with a "T" style slit in the sides of Pistons below the ring level. I have never seen this before, have you all seem this and what would the reason be for doing this?
