You must remember 600W is not a SAE number. It is equivalent to SAE 250. I use it in my Marmon 16 trans.

Hello Helmut, I use Penrite oil in my 8-77 I use Trans Oil T140 in the gearbox and differential, you can contact them for technical advice, Although they are an Australian company they have many outlets in Europe. Penrite make speciality oils to suit our old cars.

Does the manual talk about "drops per minute" of something more related to viscosity than just talking 600 weight - there is such thing as 600 weight, but it is pretty thick stuff and I would be hesitant to use it in anything other than a Ford Model A or T. I had a terrible time with the 1930 Franklin with Warner 4-Speed transmission and finally took the drops per minute formula to I believe Mobil and their engineering department found me a race product - worked fabulous. Good heavy gear oils are probably available through Penrite via www.restorationstuff.com

Hello,

what kind of oil I have to use in gearbox and dif for my auburn 6-66? The manual say's that I need 600-W, Mobiloil C or Polarine transmission oil. Which sort of oil can I use today? Is it the SAE 140 or SAE 160?

Regards

Hello,

a few weeks ago I opened the drain plug of my diff. Inside was about 4 Litre of oil, which came out of the filler plug. Is this correct? I think this is to much.

Hello Helmut,
Re your last question, what is the plug at the top for. I had a look at our Auburn differential today and it looks like you could use this as a fill point if if you wanted to and you had enough clearance to pour the oil in, you still need to remove the level plug though to get the correct oil level. I use a small hand operated transfer pump to fill the diff and gearboxes on our more modern cars and the same pump on our Auburn as it is easier for me to remove only the level plug and fill from there. Hope your 6-66A is running well and you are enjoying driving it.

Thank you, I will do so.

One last question: What is the plug with the little paper for?

You can take the bottom bolt out of the Dif. cover to drain it. By the looks of it I would take the entire cover off to clean the inside better and replace the gasket as it is leaking anyway. Maybe clean and paint the cover also.

Today, I watched my diff.

I opend the filler plug and some oil came out of the diff. But I don't see anything like a drain plug. To refresh I have to open the open the back plate of the diff, where the filler plug is?

Thanks for your answers.

My diff has no drain plug, but there is a hole in the bottom of the diff.

Hello Helmut,
As the others have advised, the filler plug is what you use to get the correct fill level on the early gearbox and diff. I recommend you contact the ACD museum for a copy of the owners handbook for a 6-66A it will be a great help to you for running your car. The photos are from the 8-77 handbook though I believe they are the same for the 6-66 A.

I'm not sure on 6-66A Auburn but on many cars such as 35-36 Auburn the fill plug on the diff. is different than the level plug. The level plug is a little less than half way on the rear cover. If you fill to the fill plug the diff. lub will come out the axle tubes all over your brakes.

Normally, the level should be up to the filler plug on both. It's a square plug on later Auburns

Hello,

where do I have to fill in oil into gear box and diff?

When do I know, that there is enough oil inside?

The car is the auburn 6-66A.
