I problem with this as many others such as Phillips Dynolife 220 is that the minimum container that is available is 5 Gal. pail.

Sorry, that link didn't work. Go here and search on centra-lube. It is a very viscious liquid anti leak grease. It is available at local suppliers.

As I have mentioned in an earlier post, I have recommended Super S Cotton Picker Spindle Grease, available at Tractor Supply. Works very well and doesn't leak out of the steering box. Comes in a squirt bottle that allows you to flow the grease into the box without creating a mess. Not expensive, either.

If that won't work you would need to repair your steering box. On L-29 steering boxes I solder a tube to the bottom steering box plate that extends above the level of the lub. and the horn rod still fits inside it. I also section the end of the bushing by about 1/4 to 1/2" and install a "O" ring to stop the leakage there. Only work if bushing is tight.

Several years ago you recommended Penrite Steering Box lube because it doesn't leak out. The steering box on my 8-105 leaks like a sieve... do you still think that changing to Penrite is a viable solution? The floor of my garage awaits your advice.

Best,

Don

Hello Everyone,

Just noticed some methods of cleanning parts which I knew nothing about, plastic media blast & dryiceblast sound interesting.

I've heard of using 1 part of molasses to 9 parts of water the remove rust. Has anyone had any success with this method?

Regards

Andrew

I don't even bead blast spark plugs. If you look at plugs that have been bead or sand blasted under magnification you will see beads wedged between the electrode and the insulator. Where do you think they go when the plug gets hot in use!

I would not sandblast the Steeringboxhousing and other technical part because the sand is shot into the housings and get stuck, even if you give it a good wash, later when it's assembled with vibrations all the sand gets shaking loose and with oil or grease in the housing you get the best grindingpaste in your bearings, not realy what you want.

You can give it a plastic media blast or dryiceblast, plastic does no harm if little is left over and dryice leaves no rest anyway or you can use a chemical ruststripper but don't leave it to long in, otherwise it will eat up the surface of seats and glidingsurfaces, make sure to equalize well as it's a acid.

ONCE AGAIN..THANKYOU MIKE. I FEAR THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE THE START OF MANY A QUESTION FOR MY 4-44 AS I AM PULLING [size=150:2r1c30ls]EVERYTHING[/size:2r1c30ls] APART. WHILST I'M AT IT, WOULD YOU RECOMMEND GETTING ALL OF THESE VARIOUS PARTS BEAD/SAND-BLASTED PRIOR TO PAINTING?

Hi Bruce, I use Penrite Steering box lub. It is called a semi fluid grease but will not track like grease but is very heavy and does not leak like diff. lub. It can be purchased from Restoration Supply Co. Phone I-800-306-7008. It is made in Australia and they are the sole supplier in the US. I use it in my L-29 and Auburn with minimal leakage. I rebuilt both boxes with modern seals.

It should have had grease of about the same consistancy as the grease in the differential. and should be about half full, but remember that these seals are not much, so it will leak out. because of the seals and the wear
My 2 cents
Ken

Lubrication in the Steering Box was created by Bruce Beattie
Could someone advise me as to what sort of oil should be used in the steering box for lubrication? And should the box be completely filled? (This is for my 1925 4-44)
