There was only the eight cylinder, standard and custom, in 1931. In fact, the 1931 to 1933 production years did not include a 6-cyl engine in the Auburn line, although there was a 12-cyl from '32 thru '34. The six returned in 1934 and continued to the end. These were the 652, 653, and 654 respectively. There had also been at least one six cylinder engined model in all the years from 1919 thru 1930.

Did Auburn produce a 6 cylinder in 1931? I remember my father parting out a 1931 Auburn in the mountains of Idaho in the 60's. The car was a good solid car but the logging roads had washed out and he had no way of getting the car off the mountain. As a 5 year old I counted the spark plugs and thought it was a 6cyl. I have however not seen one in years. Am I remembering this correctly?
