Its funny, but I bet if we asked my painter we would end up stripping paint and starting over, but he started his career at a rather famous restoration shop and they usually primed all the larger parts for the car first and then hung everything in their shop attic to bake to death - his first gut is comment I would say would be "spray a coat of sealer on it and off we go." I think he also has the opinion that while he does 100 point cars he would rather see something done and perhaps have problems later than all the stuff that never gets done and rots around.

One week after picking up the 8-98A, Dad and I were able to get her running! Took mom for a ride up the road and back. What a thrill to be cruising in a 90 year old automobile!

Mike - I agree completely. My thought is to get it running and assemble all the parts so I can determine what is missing. Once I have a proper inventory, I will disassemble, strip and epoxy the body frame and other painted parts. The car is at my dad's in Grandville if you would like to see it sometime. I would appreciate your advice!

Just beware primer doesn't seal out moisture, especially after 30 years. Might be a good idea to start with bare metal if you want the new paint to last. It is probably lacquer based primer, not very suitable for modern paint. I know not what you want to hear, but trying to safe you some grief.

I am getting old Randy. Now I recall.

Didn't the factory start the serial numbers over in 1931?

Last Saturday I purchased my first Auburn! It is a 1931 8-98A Convertible Sedan. The car has been sitting for over 30 years in primer.
My dad went with me to pick it up and we are working on getting all the parts assembled and getting it running.
Since the prior owner purchased it from an estate in primer, we have no idea what the original color was. I have pieces of leather that were black and a piece of the convertible top that was also black. Is there any way to tell what the original color was from the VIN? The VIN number is: 5232919784H.
I would like to use this forum to log the progress on the car and hopefully get some expert advice during the restoration. I will also need many parts I'm sure. Thank you for your assistance in advance!
