Thanks Curt, I hadn't thought of silk screening. I'll probably just get new ones when I get to restoring this one.

Craig, silk screening is about the only way to achieve the correct result
.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I couldn't find Flitz polish so tried a blue remover for motorcycle pipes ( not much effect). Then tried Tarnx silver cleaner. Strong so can leave it on for less than a minute don't rub, wash off. It did a great job in some places but not evenly. Then just cleaned the whole thing with more Tarnx That took off most paint and plating. Got the silver back on the ribbed sections rubbing with aluminum foil . Don't have a good way worked out yet to do black portions.

I agree that a new insert is the probably the simplest, and would look great, but who will sell you one and send it through the post. I’d love to know as I’m wanting to buy one myself

My opinion is: replace the dash insert with a new one. Might save you time and money in the long run

Probably just a bright nickle wash over the brass and the the black was done - ie why there is not much there to work with - probably looked great for 3 to 6 years when new.

Maybe play on edges with q-tips or fine cloth over a block of wood or .... - figure out is a magic formula

I have some blue magic I think I'll give that a try. I'll definitely coat it if have any luck cleaning it up. This is for a car I don't plan to restore. I'm wondering if some kind of silvering process was used as it looks the color of very tarnished silver.
Thanks

As a sidenote: If water applied makes them look half way decent - then can you just leave them alone/hands off and apply a gloss or a satin clear-coat ?

You could try Filtz polish, Never Dull, Blue Magic Chrome cleaner, or ...

My opinion is no light at the end of the tunnel. I did clean up a set and for the most part it left the chrome trim removed showing brass and the painted areas a tarnished brass look. I have seen people polish them as brass and I have also seen people do a bright chrome "wash" on them too. And of course reproduction is an option.

Craig, I am sorry to have to tell you there is no Santa Claus . The base metal is brass and you will go thru the ultra thin plating & paint.

They are it appears the black diagonals were painted on but I'm guessing that the silver base is some sort of plating. Maybe something like a silver polish might clean it without removing the black paint.

Craig, I assume the dash inserts are the diamond cross hatch variety.

The dash panels on my 851 cabriolet have darkened almost to black in the areas that were silver . Ive tried cleaning with soap and water with no luck. Is there anything that will clean that up without removing the black paint sections.
