That is great> Do a good inspection every spring and you usually have to clean it all up again say every third year at the latest.

Thanks everyone. I went with clean metal at every point as advised. Prior starter had paint on engine mount, paint on starter contact point, chrome plated cables, dirty corroded ground strap. The only thing I did not do was direct contact of brush wires. My Optima 6 volt battery turned it over nicely. Also found my cylinder 6 and 7 wires were crossed........engine now purrs!

Just clean is fine - you also need clean connections at the bell housing to starter face and the face of the starter itself at contact surfaces - think metal to metal contact. And, clean contacts at the frame on the ground. Also, there is a ground strap from one of the starter bolts to the frame too (aka why one of the starter bolts is a longer than the others.

From what I've read dielectric grease prevents corrosion at connections but does not make a better connection. I use it on house and car battery connections.

To be honest, I am unfamiliar with that.

The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

I have my new starter, thank you Curt. As instructed I will clean all contacted surface, wires and starter. What about using dielectric grease on contact areas?
