Neal, checking for cracks is good but make sure the head is flat too. I use Copper Coat gasket sealer.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I purchased a NOS gasket, but haven't yet had time to remove the head to replace it. I plan on having the head checked for cracks before I reassemble. Should I assemble it dry or use something like Permatex with it?

Another good source is Paul Terhorst, a fellow ACDer. He distributes Olson's gaskets and he & Sandy are good friends.

What year Auburn, and is it a 6 cyl. or 8 cyl. 6 cyl. are more readly available than 8 cyl.

I have always wondered why the Auburn which my father purchased for $50 was left sitting and abandoned some 60 years ago. As we worked to get it started and driving I kept expecting to have that ?Ah Ha!? moment when the mystery would be revealed. Here?s the conclusion:

Since getting it going, I?ve been driving it a few miles here and there to work out the kinks. It keeps getting too hot. The water is circulating and the radiator is functioning well, so we tested the radiator fumes and have come to the conclusion that the head gasket is leaking. Maybe this was the reason it was parked and the repair never made?

Just as with all the other work I?ve done to get this far, I?ve never torn an engine apart either. I?ve seen the Ad in the newsletter by Peter Horst for gaskets. Is this the preferred source? Any other recommendations? Any comments or suggestions on proceeding with this task?
