Thanks gentlemen - I've got a few options now, including having found a few sources for leather seals by companies cut them for quick turnaround orders for industrial applications.

Mike - "F" is a felt oil retainer which they recommend changing annually depending on amount driven.

Tom - "nice" is an understatement after the the battle to disassemble :-)

Neal,

Isn't it nice to be RE-assembling this recalcitrant hub and axle, rather than still DIS-assembling?

I am not that familiar with your car but I always replace the seals with modern lip seals. Some times it is necessary to have some machine work done to accomplish this. It looks as though "F" is a inner oil seal. I would replace that with modern also. Find the shaft and flange size and find a seal that will work. I find that I can usually find a seal with the right shaft size, it's the flange size that is usually the problem. Some times you can make a sleeve to adapt the flange size or have it machined. It requires some research. Good luck.

From the look, i would say best is to get your self a good sealcutter (cuts the inside and outside circle at once) organize good quality flat lether for mechanical purpos slightley thicker than the one you have and as well a little larger so a light pressfit is arrived and give it a good oil soak mount it and when it all comes together it will be selfshaping.
Otherwise you could also get professionaly a modern seal crafted into the assembley, this conversion would happen only once and then you can replace it your self as needed.
This is only my two cents, since i don't know your assembley and can not juge you skills.
Good luck. <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt=":wink:" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: -->

Before I reassemble my rear brake/hub assembly onto the car I want to replace the leather oil seals. Does anyone know where I might find these? Are they available or do I need to make my own? Do they come "formed" or are they flat and then shaped by the beveled end of the hub?

I'm trying to attach an image here, if it works it will give a better idea of what I'm talking about.

Thanks,
Neal
