I don't know, but a closer look is warranted...

It's possible this is from the mid to late '70's.

I think the structure was for the protective tarp

What an indignity for that poor thing (and if the salad bar is the best thing at the Village Inn, it doesn't speak much for the Village Inn). I wonder what the enclosure was supposed to prevent, since the car could be rolled out either end by a thief.

Has a little Malcolm Campbell Bluebird, a little Barney Oldfield's Golden Rocket, and a little Pontiac Club de Mer, all thrown into one.

And now for something completely different:

This car is supposed to be based on a Cord L29, built in 1936 for a land speed record attempt at breaking Ab Jenkin's records. Originally called the Golden Eagle, then used in a Jimmy Stewart movie, Speed in 1936. Then used as an attraction at the Thunderbowl Speedway in Carpinteria, CA until around 1956. Then, evidently as an attraction for the Village Inn (try their salad bar) in Missouri, until these photos.

Around 1970, these pics are from Acton, CA at a western attraction off of Highway 14. That's Alex Tremulis behind the wheel, then with Pete Politis, Alex's brother-in-law and Gyronaut pit crew member, looking at the engine, and I think that's Strother MacMinn in the side shot.

Anyone know anything more or where this ex-L29 is today???

Very interesting. Based on the nature of the photos posted so far I would venture that Mr. Tremulis took this photo in this manner specifically because the cars look so similar. I fell for his trick!

Dallas would buy 100's of Fords from Auburn Motor Sales (Ford Dealer in town) for his employees and then at the end of the year. The car in the showroom is probably one of those end of year cars for sale.

There's a photo somewhere around the dealership with Russ and Dallas standing in front of a bunch of Fords.

At first it looks like the same car, but it's not. Look closer at the reflection. The car inside appears to be a 1955 Ford Fairlane, probably Crown Victoria (chrome eyebrows), maybe a Glass Top (???):

1955 Ford Fairlane:

The car outside (you can see its reflection almost directly over the Fairlane) looks to be a 1955 Ford Customline.

I heard that the now-black 1935 Auburn speedster that S. Ray Miller owned was, when owned by Dallas Winslow, displayed in the ACD Company during the 1950s. Is that the "little Auburn in the window" in the picture?

What's up with the Ford in the building? Did the ACD Company handle other used cars?

Second-to-last pic is 1477, I filled that antenna hole 37 years ago and it still has that same old top, raised only when it looks like rain on Ninth St. This picture was taken shortly before it was repainted Palm Beach Tan.

Love the L-29 photo! The perspective is wonderful and the car has a very sinister look to it.

Thanks for posting all of these wonderful pictures Steve. Just think, hopefully, forty or fifty years from now, someone will be looking at and enjoying all of the pictures that David Turner and John Fredericks snap over a Reunion weekend, "flaws" and all! I hope they include pictures of people just like Alex's photos, because the people are the heart of this club.

I think I've seen Richard Jones' name, the noted Tucker restoration expert, in several of the ACD newsletters. If so, then this must be his wife on the right with Chrissie Tremulis. I don't think he gets to spend much time browsing these forums anymore. If you know him, please send him your warmest regards and a huge THANK YOU for saving so many of these wonderful cars from ending up in the crusher...

UPDATE: This is Betty Jones, but not of Tucker fame. Anyone know of another ACD Betty Jones?

These have probably not seen the light of day in decades and now they're protected in archival sleeves in closed notebooks. The Kadachromes look perfect, the Ektachromes have a red tint. I scanned on a Nikon coolscan 5000 that automatically does a great job of getting rid of dust and scratches and color-corrects for the Ektachromes.

I'm thinking these are from 1956...

The Cord just looked powder blue to me, but these colors seemed to be a host of names, maybe saying Ceylon blue for the L29 is correct, it has a nice ring to it. The tires were large but the wide whites did not look quite right, maybe they came a little more narrow back then.

From ACME Proxlin Color Matching System, this page lists Auburn - Cord colors, names and formulas from 1930 - 1935.

Colors listed are;

1930: Cepheus Green; Ceylon Blue; Cream; Paul Revere Green; Pilgrim Gray.
1931: Beaver Brown; Boulevard Green; Brunswick Green; Deep Gray; Desert Sand; Driftwood Smoke; Homage Blue; Maroon; Sandrunner; Tartan Green.
1932: Auburn Blue; Bedford Gray; 8-100 Brown; Carlton Blue; Carmine; Cedric; Cream; 8-100 Gray; Gun Metal Gray; Old Ivory; Pitch Pine Green; Preston Green; Ravenswood Brown; Regal Green; Saxon Gray; Tarragon Green.
1934. Admiral Blue; Brittanic Beige; Carmine; Cep. Green; Clinton Maroon; Cream; Delray Green; Derby Red; Desdemona Blue; Empress Beige; Lockhaven Gray; Monte Carlo Blue; Moonstone Gray; Nassau Orange; Palm Beach Gray; Pine Pitch Green; Plum Brown; Preston Green; Regal Green; Russian Red; Delray Green; Saxon Gray; Silverwing Gray; Valentine Gray; Vermilion:
Late 1934: Chrome Paint; Dark Green; Desert Sand; Evening Gray; Gage Blue; Jewell Gray; Mountain Green Light; Nevada Silver; Newark Tan; Royal Blue; Trenton Tan; Vermilion.
1935: Artillery Gray; Burnt Rust; Carmel Beige; Greyhaze; Neptune Blue; Sandeen Brown; Shadowlite; Storm King Green; Swiss Green No. 4; Thicket Green No. 3; Willowmere Green.

The photo with Alex Tremulis with Isabel and Gertrude Duesenberg
is wonderful, it seems like it was taken yesterday.
And he looks so young and healthy!
A lot of time the kodachrome colors will change and the image has survived perfectly.
Was Isabel the daughter of Fred? Gertrude the wife of Fred?
They appear to be family friends.
Isabel was a very sophisticated looking lady, every bit Duesenberg.
She reminds me of the lady in the Dusenberg advertisements.
I have to keep reminding myself these are fifty year old pictures.

I vote with Ken, that sure looks like an 8/10 Cord. I'll bet the L-29 had clearance issues with those big tires too.

It looks like the door may be shorter but the word was that the pictures were from 1958, before the 8/10th. That is a beautiful L29, the scene made him make time to snap a shutter.

From the view of the pastel blue car it looks like Mr Tremulis was impressed by the sight.
There was no single lens reflex back in the day but probably a rangefinder camera.
There was another camera hanging from the shirt of Buehrig, maybe a Rolleicord, that had a better viewfinder for framing the shots. Engineers loved those cameras.
It looks like he stepped back a bit to include the neon store signs, "Duck Inn" to add interest, it's to bad he cut off the Cigarette Sportsman?s front bumper.

can't identify the other cars.

Yup, KC-97.

I can't find an image of Edwards AFB's control tower from the 1950's. Got one?

Also, can you ID the cars in the background?

I don't think thats a B29, looks more like a KC97 cargo ship. there is also a B47 in the background. The GMC panel trucks look very new so I would put the year at 1954 or 1955. Wild guess but the control tower looks similar to that at Edwards AF base near Palmdale CA.

B.A.T. 5 and Le Sabre side by side. Can you guess which one caught the attention of Alex?

Year and Air Force base, anyone (there's a B-29 in the background)?
