You would have thought that the owners would have welcomed the Tucker Club's expert inspection, documentation, and stamp of approval .
This would only serve to greatly increase it's eventual auction value ~~~ IF ACTUALLY AUTHENTIC .

It is apparently still for sale on the Benchmark Classics web site. I'll call Justin this week and see if he has any updates for us. Wouldn't be surprused to see it again in Scottsdale.

I follow the TACA forums occasionally, and what I've gathered is the car's owners - from the guy who stored the half-finished project in his garage, to the restorers who finished it and promoted it - declared the car outright to be original and were not willing to work with TACA authorities to back it up. Essentially, their attitude was, "It's the real deal, and if you won't take our word for it, you are an uninformed idiot." It progressed to a pretty nasty public argument, with grade school-level behavior coming from both sides.

I heard the car sustained minor damage in the tent collapse and that the restoration team vowed to fix it, gratis, for the buyer.

Scott: Great post on the official Tucker Club's position on this Convertible !

From their website one has to wonder why it's prsent owners would not be more forthcomming with the car's engine serial numbers & Tucker Club member experts inspections etc.

To me ths sends up a real red flag !
Might the present owner be worried that the real Tucker factory records of this engine number indicate it's true history in another known and factory documented Tucker 4 door; and not a convertible prototype ?

We all have to wonder why any owner who is trying to sell a well advertised and spposed rare car for miliions $$$ might wish to keep it's true history that muddy and secret?

I haven't heard anything about the convertible since it was apparently damaged at Russo & Steele. I assume it was repaired afterwards. Here is the Tucker Club's official statement regarding this unique car: www.tuckerclub.org/bbs3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1733

Has anyone here heard any more news on this so called "Tucker Convertible" lately ?
We need a "Tucker Convertible" Update !
Has anyone else actually seen , and inspected it close-up ?
Was the "restoration" ever completed ?
Did it ever sell ?

If not~~~
I would think that this sort of car would be a natural drawing card for the upcomming Barrett~Jackson AZ. Auction & three ring circus this February .

All those more money than brains hotshots that attend B-J each year would fall over each other for a chance to over-bid on this "Tucker Convertible Prototype" !
After all they like to out-bid each other on all those "clones", "tribute cars", and "resto-mods" while appearing live on Speed TV for all the world to see just how much disposable money they have to spend.

As an added additional auction and TV attraction Craig Jackson could bring back that buyer's agent guy from here in Philly, who wears the red Ferrari jacket and cap.
He could sit in the Tucker Convertible and dare and egg-on all the other bidders to out-bid him like he did the last time he appeared at the auction. He has not appeared for a few years now~
As an added attraction he, and Craig, could have another live autograph signing session, on Speed TV; like they did the last time he appeared soon after the Tucker goes over the auction block! This autograph session could appear live on Speed TV too !
This would make great auction "Reality TV" !

What are your thoughts on this "Tucker Convertible" today~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ AND ~also my B-J Auction promotional ideas ?
I cannot wait to hear all the forum's thoughts !

What a nasty mess. If I had a car there I'd buy a vanity plate that says "I Survived Russo & Steele Scottsdale 2010."

The 1933 Auburn speedster that was there survived with only a busted headlight. Haven't heard anything about the Cord.

The car went across the block last evening. I didn't watch the auction on-line, but was told that at approximately $1,500,000 it was a no-sale. I did confirm with Cole this a.m. that it was a no-sale, but he declined to provide other details. I'm sure he is hoping for a private sale today.
However, this makes my fantasy bid of $1,500,000 darn close!
I'm sure the official results will be posted later today.

Hi Tom,
This is a beautifully executed example of a Tucker convertible. It is so accurate if it never was, it is now. If the boxed oval frame is unique I am afraid I would have to consider it at least 98% original. With not a shred of evidence other than the frame and verbal testimony I have to say it sure looks like a Tucker convertible. They say possession is 98% of the law. Maybe it was some secret project. The mystery continues, it would have been a shame to see it destroyed in the collapse. It will be a subject of debate forever on.
There was supposed to be 1.5 million dollars of damage and the cars have not been examined, there may have been some ACD cars involved.

Hi,

With the complete dearth of ANY original documentation for this assembly of a car, would it be ethical to insure it as anything other than "parts?" How much do y'all s'pose the owner insured it for?

In the absence of factory documents, what about the car itself? Where has it been for 50 years?

Officialy Chevrolet USA never offered open cars in 1939. So would you concider it as a factory covertible or as a converted fatcory car ?

Pardon me while I pry my foot out of my mouth. A factory 53 model line convertible Studebaker would be rare as hens' teeth, since Studie didn't offer a convertible in the 53-style series. But I know what I saw, so now I have been bit by a bit of a bug. There's a website

oldcarandtruckpictures.com/Stude ... heEnd.html

that has a large showcase of 50's Studebakers from the 50 Bullet Nose (best car I ever owned--bought it for $75.00 in 1978 or so) through the unfortunately creepy 58 and on to the Larks. In that gallery there is a photo of a convertible 53--stated to be converted from a hardtop.

A direct reference to a convertible Hawk conversion can be found at

www.rodandcustommagazine.com/fea ... index.html

This car was apparently built on the west coast and was built too late to be the one I saw in South Bend.

Another Hawk convertible conversion is listed at

billstudepage.homestead.com/files/hawkcon.jpg

Well, none of this is ACD, but it has a certain orphan-car interest. Next time I get to downtown South Bend I'll stop at the Studie museum and see if they have any info on any FACTORY 53-series convertibles.

I've been following the progress of this car for some time, and about all you can [i:xrafu7gg]reliably[/i:xrafu7gg] say is that it's based on a partial Tucker platform and cowl, and has some authentic Tucker sheetmetal and the correct engine. Claims that it's an "original factory prototype convertible" may or may not be true, and there will be (and are) both vehement supporters and detractors. In any case, it's interesting, and when finished will probably represent what a factory Tucker convertible may have looked like. I admire the ambition and work that have gone into making it, question the $5,000,000 price tag, and look forward to seeing it finished and on display somewhere. It sure won't be in my garage - for that kind of money I'll take a Model J, an 851 Speedster and a Cord 810.

By the way, Tom, where exactly would anyone find that "'53-'58 or so Studie convertible" that "someone hung a Hawk front end on"? I have seen a few 1953-1954 coupes that were transformed into convertibles, and they certainly were lovely cars. Not too sure about the rigidity, though. I'll bet a Hawk convertible would be a sharp car, too . . . but you're right, what do you call it? I would say it's a "converted convertible!" :D

What an incredible coincidence! I just bought a car from that fellow over the phone. He assures me that it is a rare futuristic prototype, built seventy years before its time--a combination Auburn-Cord. He said it's called the Aucord.

The only nonoriginal modifications are a few pesky Honda badges, but I figure I can remove those by Labor Day.

Some years ago I spotted a Studebaker Silver Hawk convertible roaming the streets of South Bend, IN. The only problem is that Studebaker never built a convertible Hawk. All of the Hawks through 1961 were built on the Coupe or Hardtop bodies that dated back to the 1953 model year. Someone hung a Hawk front end on a '53-'58 or so Studie convertible and called it a Hawk. So, do you want to call this Studebaker a "Convertible Hawk," or a "Converted Hawk?" Is it even a Hawk at all?

I fitted my '57 Silver Hawk with a Golden Hawk blower. It ran like a scared Banshee and could outrun the Michigan State Troopers. (But not their radios--that's a different story.) Was it a "Supercharged Silver Hawk," or a "Converted Silver Hawk?"

Somebody gas-axes and welds up some Tucker body panels to make a convertible car that looks like a Tucker. Is it a "Convertible Tucker," or a "Converted Tucker?" Is it even a Tucker at all?

Hi guys, A few people will swear to this cars authenticity.
There?s no doubt this is a Tucker cowl. It just seems there are more questions than answers.
Rather than announce they car is the first prototype open car, why not let it be displayed and then determine if it is authentic.
There may be some substantial evidence proclaiming it?s pedigree thru spoken word or print.
It is a very nice exercise to announce 57 as the Holy Grail is a little premature.

Hey Guys,
Well here is a news flash?the world?s only Tucker Convertible will premiere at Keels & Wheels next weekend, also the featured marque is Duesenberg. This Tucker rag top has gotten a lot of attention and generated controversy.

For the last several months discussion groups and the Old Cars Weekly web site have been buzzing with news of the World?s only Tucker convertible. Today Bob Fuller Chairman of the Keels & Wheels Councours d?Elegance and Justin Cole, President of Benchmark Classics jointly announced the car will premiere next weekend May 2nd in Seabrook, TX.

I spoke to Cole a short time ago about the unveiling. ?The car is not yet complete, but due to the level of interest we thought a preview would be in order. We have a large shop, and for the last few weeks we have devoted about 70% of our labor hours to the Tucker. We chose Keels & Wheels to preview the car for several reasons; I and my partners are originally from Texas, the growing reputation of the show and its Chairman Bob Fuller, and mostly due to the wide exposure the car will garner with some of the country?s foremost collectors and the general public.?

Fuller says, ?We are pleased that the world?s only Tucker convertible will be seen publically for the first time at Keels & Wheels. Justin and his crew have been working non-stop to be ready. Although the car won?t be complete you will definitely see what it will be upon completion.?
