you guys are great. glad to read all of you exersize your cars. in the 24 years i've had an acd car, 4 to count them, i can honestly say they.ve been on the road, and a couple times in a corn field, and forded a creek. no harm done. i might add all these cars have been raced . and the new one will be raced next weekend at the newport hillclimb. an auburn, never mine, has held the class record at the hillclimb more than once. it will be interesting to me to see how a salon does.they sure perform like no auburn i'e ever owned before. shortly after i purchased the salon i drove it 350 mi in one very cold day. no problems. traveling close to 50,000 mi in acd cars has been one of the most rewarding things i've done in my life. the newport hillclimb is a one of a kind event,as fellow club memberscharles meyer, mike dube, ed seratt, charlie glick, al sikora &p.p. jim robinson car attest to.if anyone is interested in going to the hillclimb i can be reached at 708 256 0677 for further info. keep those acd cars on the road.

As I write this I am in Rapid City SD. My wife and I are on the Glidden Tour. Saw Crazy Horse Monument on Mon., the Custer State Park on Tues, and Wed. It was 35 Degrees Tues. Morn But we have had the top down all the way. Will see Deadwood on Thurs. and Mount Rushmore. I love to drive the L-29 and I only hope i can wear it out. I'll just rebuild it again. Scenery FANTASTIC in South Dakota.

In order for these cars to always be on the MOST WANTED LIST they must be seen, out and about. The best way for these cars to draw the attention they deserve is to be seen on the road. They truly are a piece of art that was made to be driven, and as long as we restore or maintain them as the best we can. It would be almost impossible for us to wear them out again. We have improved on everything that we use to restore or maintain these cars. We could never drive them as many miles on as harsh a road as there were back in their day, nor do we abuse them even close to the way they were abused. We hardly ever let them get wet or dirty, We do not just let anybody behind the wheel.
Can you imagine driving any of the ACD cars down a muddy street or forging a stream so you can go fishing?????

I think that we should drive the cars and get them on the road when we can. I don't have a ACD car but I do have a brand x car from the 1930's and one from the early 1950's and I drive them when I can. the 1950's car I do drive lots (every day almost). We need to show people out there that these cars are still a good thing to buy, because you can still use them when you want to. Both of my cars can and do highway speeds and both are all original as they came from the factory's. No mods on any of them. I have a son in his 20's and his friends did not think that you could really use these cars like that. Well I changed there minds right away. I showed them that these cars do just as well or sometimes better on gas than there NEW mustang gt. Do just as good on the road. We need to let people know this if we are to keep the really OLD cars on the roads in the future. For me I think we should all be doing something like this. I would hate to see these cars become HOT RODS. Or worse just get left behind. What really gets people going is to see them on the roads and to hear them run.

I truly believe in driving my car. I sometimes drive 500 miles to a show and try and get my Cord "out there" as much as possible. By doing this it has created an ever-increasing number of fans and converts who begin a new fascination with ACD cars.
It's especially gratifying when younger folk ask questions and express their love of the design and asthetics, as well as interest in the cars' history. Most younsters are fans of modern compact cars and as us older folk literally die off, many cars and information die with us.
I have laminated a written brief history of Cords and their contribution to the modern cars of today, and always display this with my car. Many people have thanked me for this, saying that they wish more people would do so with other vintage and classic cars. <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt="" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: -->

Bob,

Its a pity you can't join us this next weekend in Auburn, I suspect you'd enjoy it, especially the Ninth &amp; Main festivities.

Perhaps we'll see you there one year.

I had a man come over to me while I was parked ,and he said , We had one of these once. Then went on to say. It had running boards like yours. Then I nearly fell out of the car laughing when he said ...It was a Standard Eight

Bob,

On my way home from a cruise in last Monday, while at a stop light, I had a woman ask if the car was a Rolls Royce. Took me a bit aback, as I'd never had anyone mistake it for one of those before.

I will allow I found it preferable to the usual "what model Ford is that?"!

Hello all, I drive my Auburn 3-4 days a week. I do around 3000 miles a year. I get a lot of people asking me what sort of car is that. where was it made. Being R.H.D. it confuses them. They say I thought it was a rolls. and I answer. No its not one of them common old cars. Bob in England..

My 8-100A will be getting its second oil change of the season prior to driving it to Auburn, if that gives you any idea of my thoughts on the subject.

I concur. It might never be essential for values at the auctions where people do their homework. It is essential for another kind of values.

It is important to make them visible as a benefit to American culture and a broader historical context. Our nation's economy for the 20th century was largely automotive.

I'll never forget seeing and hearing a Duesenberg for the first time. It was a Phaeton. It drove by at about 60 mph. My dad threw me into the Rambler and we followed, watching, listening. A few miles down the road, the driver stopped for ice cream and showed us the engine and features of the car. Then, and only then, did I truly understand the difference between it and our neighbor's Model A Ford, aside from size. I was only 6 at the time.

To quote Dennis Adler, in his book, Duesenberg,

A Duesenberg is a chassis and engine...the coachwork was no different than a bespoke suit on ones own body.

Such appreciation I'd apply to Auburns and Cords as well. Two weeks ago I experienced the same feeling in Carmel, seeing and hearing a '31 L-29, '36 Auburn 852 Speedster, and a Murphy Convertible Coupe. That supercharger whine and low engine hum...unforgettably wonderful.

8-26-2006 I dated this because today I drove 75 miles to go to a car show. The driving part doesn't bother me. But the turn out was a little less than I had hoped for. There was around 30 cars at the show, most all were from the big three. Nearly all of them were from 1960 and newer, The lone independent was 1958 Studebaker truck. There were no ACD cars in attendance and I would have been in total shock had there been. So yes I voted for the cars to be driven, Imagine the surprise on someones face to see a real ACD car in person, not just in a book or on some website someplace.

I have to agree...the cars were ment to be driven. There's no reason not to drive them. there's nothing on these cars that can't be fixed and the more you drive them the more reliable they become.

Regarding the comment made above about being the only ACD car at a local show. Three weeks ago we had a local show (a rather large one) and we had 17 ACD cars on the field.

The most enjoyment comes from using the cars. My father has driven our Duesenberg to Auburn several times. Watching the faces of people as the car goes by is great. Get them out of the garage.

Since I won't be able to give my opinion on 9th street this year I'll post mine. I would agree with 67cat's opinion. One of the best ways to build interest in our cars is to make them visible to the general public whenever possible, whether it be a trip to the post office or church, etc. I have driven my car around town many times and in nearly every case, I have had people tell me that it is a beautiful car yet they had never heard of an Auburn. These situations allow me the chance to give a brief introduction to the ACD story. I would encourage everyone to participate in local car shows, etc. whenever possible as well. I can almost promise that you will have the only ACD car there. To insure the future success of our club we must continue to build interest in our beloved vehicles by making them visible.

I own them to drive them. I love to look at show cars, but I want something I can take to the post office or to church or even to Wal-Mart, that way folks can really get a look at them and enjoy them. Of course I realize that Duesies and such cannot be used in this method, insurance rates would be incredible if they were.

While chatting on the phone tonight with another ACD Club Member, we spoke of the various grades of cars out there.

There's Pebble Beach Cars and ACD "correct" cars, then Trailer Queens and drivers. There are cars that appeal to all different types of owners.
Some guys like cars that are beautiful works-of-art that are never driven while others like to drive their cars cross-country year after year.

That beings up the notion of "saving something for the next guy." In my opinion cars should be driven but not to the point that they are needlessly being worn out. I think they should be on the road around town so everyone can enjoy them. Other than the once-in-a-lifetime cross-country trip, I don't think that our 70-year old cars should be worn out with highway miles. Let's leave something for the next guy! The ACD members a 100 years from now are really going to have their hands full...

We have about 2000 members, so there are 2000 opinions out there. I want to hear yours! I'll be on 9th street on Friday to hear your opinions firsthand, but in the meantime, why not answer our poll?

See you all at the 51st Reunion!
