Now that you guys mention it, we had a large portable vacuum at a foundry where I worked that had a pickup like that.
The question is "WHY" someone thought the Museum needed to have such an item!?!

Hi,

From the catacombs of my childhood memories I see that this thing reminds me of the locking lever for an attachment on my mother's pre-war (about 1938 or so) Kirby vacuum cleaner.

I specifically recall that as a blushing young bride she bought a lifetime service agreement that allowed her to have the Kirby totally factory refurbished upon demand for $5.00. Kirby lost on that one--she lived to age 88. That vacuum never suffered for a new cord, motor, hose, bag, etc.

I'm surprised that you all didn't now that the Duesenberg was the first car to have a central vaccum system. Thus the pattern for the vaccum hose end. The Duesenberg is such a powerfull car it had alot of extra vaccum from the motor so they placed a tank under the body and ran a vaccum line from the intake manifold to this canister. Another hose went into the passenger compartment to clean the carpets. The canister picked up the debree to keep it from going into the intake and could be cleaned out when needed. My wife told me I should put LOL after this so you would all now I am full of shit. I told here there was no need because every one already knows I'm full of shit.
