Were all cars supposed to have the spring wrapping I recently visited the Nedercutt Museum and some were and some were not, what is correct? And the purpose and method was what? Some appear to have used a vinyl material I assume leather would be correct, and did wrapping have metal eyelets not unlike old leather work boots?

The Factory supplied no spring covers on there chassis.Owners through there coachbuilders may have added them.

My guess is that the spring coverings did three things:

1) helped to quiet any 'squeaking' noise from the springs
2) prevented any 'rusty' water from dribbling down the sides of the nicely painted spring packs, staining/discoloring them.
3) prevent the rusty water from getting onto the tires. (when double sided WW's were common)
I have no idea as to how they could affect judging standards on your particular car.

I would guess the biggest reason was to contain lub. on the springs.

I don't recall seeing them on any "J" but I do recall requests to "spray the springs"on others. The other observations on covers make perfect sense to me.
