Some things just need maintained and otherwise left alone. Original patterns in ACD cars are hard to find and few restorations really live up to nut & bolt by nut & bolt correct, thread stitch by thread stitch correct, and etc.

that would be the best decision for that car.

Hello,

is it known what will/is happening to J-270?

Will the new owner preserve the car or is the car "victim" for a "as new restauration"?

There is an article on CNN.com in the Money section this morning about the Clark Gable Duesenberg, for those interested.

Mike,
Randy Ema told me the twin carb SJ's didn't run smooth at low speeds and I often thought they would dump a lot of gas into the manifold(s) if
the engine had the "rams horn"system. I think if I were going to mosify a "J"about all I would do would be to bump the compression up a couple of points and use two carbs on seperate manifolds. Maybe Randy will expand on this thread if he has time.

Those brass carbs for the SJ are pretty rare. You see mostly the truck carb version of the UU-2.

I bet your right Bob, heat shields not drip pans. The moment any gas hit those shields it would evaporate. Of course evaporating gas is what burns!
That looks like a lot of carb. flow for even a Duesenberg. What do you think Bob?

I wonder if they are "drip"pans or heat shields to prevent percolation
of the gas in the carburetors after shut down? Which car is this? I have a close up picture of the twin carburetors on the Duesenberg Special and
it has a bigger "drip"pan or heat shield than this one shows.

Thank you Chris!

Seven million is a lot of money. Looks like it is a failed attempt to top the record from the last year.

Three years ago there was this
Bohman & Schwartz SJ Roadster sold at the same place for $ 3.3 Million. So, a plus of 4 Million for the Clark Gable ownwership is not so bad in my opinion.
A Stars fame and popularity is a fast vanishing good. Clark Gable was a star of the pre-war cinema. A few years ahead and his popularity is "Gone with the Wind" <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt="" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: -->

On the first look J-355 looks like a really bargain offer.

The over restoration of that car would be a crime. I agree with AJ.Leave it alone, drive it,enjoy it.These grossly over done cars represent to me,a
major problem with the hobby. The "hobby"has become one big auction
after another and even if I could afford a "J" at today's prices, I would never make a bid on one. Standing around one at a car show getting an ulcer worrying about it doesn't sound like fun either. Leno has the right idea. Bring them back to new then drive them right into the ground and then redo it again.
Most peole that know me know I have little respect for useless relics of
bygone times and that includes ALL cars, guns and aircraft or anything else.

J-151 is one of my favorite Duesenbergs and I consider that price a bargain.

The Blue-J price seems low to me too, but I guess the bidders were factoring in the 600k plus to restore the car. I probably would leave it as is myself.

We've got the Gyronaut on display, front and center, at the MidAmerica Auctions tent at the entrance to the show, just to generate some sponsorship support. Vince Gardner built its body along with Alex Tremulis, and there's also the Vince Gardner Special on the field on Sunday. So he's been well-represented.

Here's a few pics of ACD's up close. I figured you'd get a kick out of 'em. You already know which ones they are. And, of course, Alex's side exhausts on one of R&S's 812's on the streets of Monterey. Some pretty nice cars just milling about. One guy pulled up his Bugatti Veyron in front of the Lodge at Pebble Beach and got yelled at to "move it off to the side of the road". When the driver of a Veyron is treated like he's in an AMC Pacer, it can only be this one special weekend (nothing against Pacers, mind you).

Hello Chris,

in my opinion, that is not to much money for that car. It looks like unrestored history is not "en vogue". I hope the new owner is a keeper and not a friend of "better than new" over-restauration.

It sure would be nice to see Bill's car go to someone who would maintain &amp; excercise it as Bill used to. I talked with him briefly at the "drag races" a couple of years ago, it seemed to be running pretty well then. Been one of my personal favorites for many years, interesting on a number of levels.

Hello Chris,

J-560 would be the top-sale of the Dueseys @ Monterey auctions.

I like the car J-270 (and its patina/scars of history) very much. Maybe the car will go for more than the estimate. We will see.

It would be interesting aswell how much the hammerprice difference between the two (very similar looking) Willoughby Limousines @Mecum and Gooding will be.

Cheers
