It was the head that had a copper patch on it,not the block..
It was toward the right front side and was held with small screws. It didn't leak so we did not disturb it. Don Thompson painted the engine International Harvester red and said he hated green unless it was the shade of green used on money.

It will be interesting to see who wound up with J-487 at that bargain price and what will be done with it. The engine change could have figured into the cost but it was done so early in the car's history that I feel it scarcely matters. Bob told me that the block was patched when Don Thompson owned the car. I inspected the engine a few years ago and the block showed no visible appearance of repair (to my very untrained eye) so I assume it was either replaced or more expertly repaired.
The car was running and driving well as of a few years ago.

This may be a way to protect the value of currency as they deliver better than 10% in inflationary times.
Bob,
I saw a late night talk show Friday night where the crowd cheered. The guest was treated like royalty.
When they get around to the first amendment it could lead to property confiscation, interment, then the second.
When traveling in a very expensive vehicles, you need to protect your investment. A lot of the reason the Duesenberg and luxury vehicles of the thirties was halted was that the wealthy did not want to flaunt there wealth when unemployed workers were standing in soup lines.

In talking with a restorer friend about J-284 yesterday, I made the comment that Murphy convertible coupes are an unusual example of the most prevalent body style being the most desirable and, of late, valuable. Of the roughly 25 disappearing top cars built, the vast majority have survived.

Look at J395/2414, Murphy DT CC: 2.64 mil with no blower.
J279/2301 Murphy DT CC no blower Sold with an asking price of 2.5 mil
The way the value of our currency is being erroded, those who have money are looking for a solid hedge against inflation. What better place to put it than a top quality, no excuses Duesenberg? 20 years from now that will seem cheap.

Don Thompson died in December of 2009 and I have no idea if Jack Irwin is still alive or not. It seems like yesterday that all this took place.I was 16 and am now looking into the muzzle of 76. Time staggers on.

As Randy clarified elsewhere on the forum, the present blower on J-284 / 2310 is a recreation. The car at one point did have an original blower installed but no longer.
Now I'm really confused about that sale price.
Engine swaps have a differing effect on price depending on make. It is a killer in the musclecar world. With Duesenberg I never thought it was a huge deal as the engine number is not on the block it but certainly does impact the price to some extent.

I'm surprised at the low number on the lwb Duesenberg phaeton as well. The swapped engine should have had nothing to do with the low number. If I had the money, I would have paid 2 or 3 times more for that car than the convertible coupe. There must be something I don't know about the car. Even the town car brought more money.

No, I had the same question in mind. The later added supercharger can't be the reason.
It looks like superchargers (single- and dual-carb.typs) are available for under $ 100k

I believe they stated in the catalog description that the blower was an original (although as a twin pot I question that) installed 40 years ago which could add 200-300k in value for the blower alone. I'm at a a loss where the other 800k came from.

Possibly a bidding war? Think last year, the Whittell car...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the car does not have it's original engine. I would think this affects the value some, though I am certainly in no position to fathom a guess how much, since I believe it was done very early in the car's life. You would think (I would anyway) that a car like this, being a the only LWB LeBaron Sweep Panel, would bring more.

That would be the secret of the auctioneer and the consigner. It would be interesting to know, in case of a buy-back, if the "buyer" has to pay the buyers premium to the auctioneer <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt="" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: -->

wizzells wrote: The estimate on 2336/J487 was $900,000-$1,200,000, but I'm pretty sure it went for less than that. Can't remember the exact number (I'm thinking it was in the $800,000 range, + commission) and the results are not posted on RM's site yet.
Hello,
RM has now posted the auction result on its Site. The Duesenberg J 2336/J-487 is listed with $ 880000 (incl. buyers premium?)
That is not so much for an "original" Dual Cowl Pheaton.

That must include the buyers premium, I believe they hammered it @ $950K.
The new owner bought a ton of cars. In the hour I watched Saturday night, he spent about 5 mil on three cars.

Steve Derus wrote: anyone have information on prices of cars #2310 and 2336 in Arizona?
Hello Steve,
if I got it right, the red Murphy CC 2310 was $ 2.5 or 2.55 Million plus 10% auction fee.
I don't know price of the other (three?) Modell J Duesenbergs which were auctions by RM and Barrett Jackson.
Does someone know the results?
Matt
