Harry Shulzinger's Duesy

J-528's engine does have some parts from other cars in it but it's not J-487. The car did swap frames with J-551, though.

"Hot Rod Harry" died in 1974. The car went to Dr. Don Vesley, then Rick Carroll, Bob Bahre, Noel Thompson, the Imperial Palace, Dean Kruse, Rich Atwell, and currently John O'Quinn.

Does the car currently have engine J528 and chassis 2551?
Engine J-487 is in the LeBaron LWB Dual Cowl Phaeton (chassis 2336), or not?

Great update John. The note from 1992, ACD NL #5 Recollections sure clinched it for me for me. The bilious "chartreuse body" was what struck me back in the 50's and this is the same car I saw many many years ago in Cincy. That info, along with the mention again of a transmission from a White truck. I was interested to note the reference to the transmission being a 5-spd Clark, had not heard this before. Sounds like the car had a very convoluted history with parts from here and there, but at least one whole car is still with us. At one time in the 50's this car was supposedly for sale for roughly $3500.00, how times have changed!!

1993 Malk p88 "Conv Torpedo Sedan" Named Riveria it had a totally disappearing top. Super charged car. J528 /2551. 3 made, other two are J521/2550 & J525/2555.
1992, ACD NL #5 Recollections by Bob Roller. Mid-50's owned by Harry Schulizinger. Fenders black with a hideous Chartreuse body. Tells about J5821 swallowing its timing chain and broke a hole throught #3 They put in J487 after soupinging it up with Jahns high compression pistons and boring it to 3.875. Bell housing from J467. Installed an overdrive transmission, a Clark from a White truck. 1st was useless, but 5th, overdrive made it roll right along. Saw 140 mph .
1987 December 1987 TCC Fred Roe, p43 at the Gilmore museum "Duesenberg Experience" Owner Noel Thompson. Original owner Col. Jacob Schick, came with odd little scoop louvers on hood. (Note: Also at meet, J521/2550 with engine J440)
1987 March,CC Car of the Month by Adler p30, 6 page article.on J521/2550. Mentions that J528/2551, built to order for Colonel Jacob Schick is now on J467!

Hi! It was a pleasure reliving the adventure! I also remember it was one of my jobs to pass out the meet plaques at the banquet. There were about three people who asked me if I was interested in selling MY Duesenberg! That was quite a thrill too! I will look through my files and see if I have a picture of the Duesy. (I have about 8000 slides to sort, so it will be a while!) I may even have movies!Ric.

Ric, your mention of the "White truck transmission" was the clincher. That has to be the same car I saw in the Cincy area in the late 50's and early 60's. I remember that the car was a funky shade of green and a bit tired on the outside. Sounds like it was not too tired on the inside though. Maybe Harry painted it before going to Auburn. Unfortunately I don't have any color pics from that far back. Thanks for reviving some interesting memories from the distant past.

I don't remember it being green and that is my favourite coloUr! I do remember it was a convertible, had a "white" transmission. During judging he had it idling at about 100 rpm! You could see the individual fan blades! The judge asked him if he "could make it idle backwards!" then he asked him to speed it up. Harry was not in the best of moods and he floored it! 5000 rpm, kept it screaming there and asked, " Is that fast enough for you?". That was back in the early '60s. before '64. I believe Harry died shortly after that weekend. I believe the car is now restored and still around. I will find out for you and let you know its whereabouts. Ric.

Was Harry Shulzinger from Cincinnati? Was the Duesy a shade of green? If so, believe I saw it around town on a number of occassions many years ago. Where is it now?

Hi! You couldn't have had a better mentor! I can remember getting out of Harry Shulzinger's Duesy and getting in the back of Paul's Sedan. We hit the 100 mark somewhere out by the high school. I looked out the back window to see how far back Harry's Duesy was. All I could see was the Duesenbird right behind the rear window! Harry told me to use the Duesy as my own car for the weekend! What a guy!, what a car! Sometime I will tell the story of riding in a Cord s/c phaeton and being stopped by the police and ticketted for doing about 110! 'Course it had an Olds engine in it, still front drive though. I wonder who would drive a Cord with an Olds engine today <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt="" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: --> Ric.
