Duesenberg Books

I had a chance to build the big ACD book by Don Butler, I think, on eBay once for $1. However, my friend who does all my eBay purchasing for me was out of town at the moment and...whoops.

Fred Roe's book has an appendix in the back that catalogs the cars by chassis and engine numbers. It also lists the page numbers for available pictures of the cars in both his and Elbert's book.

You may have to look around some, but both these books can be had, and occasionally reasonably as well.

...I haven't yet been able to find a copy of the Roe, Elbert, or Newport books in my price range, but Josh Malks's book is wonderful. My copy is so tattered I keep it in a giant ziploc bag.

One book to avoid is Dennis Adler's "Duesenberg." Looks great on the coffee table, with plenty of pretty pictures, but as a reference book it sucks. IMHO.

Does the Fred Roe book list each car made (as best they can) with each of their histories???

JL Elbert's book is probably the most comprehensive Duesie book but I always loved Herb Newport's The Duesenberg;: The story of America's premier car written with Louis William Steinwedel is a really outstanding book. Written in 1970 it gives a first person account about the Duesenberg era. Herb Newport helped design the Mormon Meteor racing car and he designed both SSJ's for Clark Gable &amp; Gary Cooper.

My picks would be Fred Roe's "Duesenberg The Pursuit of Perfection" first published 1982 as #1, followed by J.L. Elbert's "Duesenberg The Mightiest American Motorcar" first published 1951, and finally Josh Malks' "Illustrated Duesenberg Buyer's Guide" first published 1993.

The first 2 have been reprinted a few times, but both are now long out of print. I suspect Josh's book may be also. All can be found from time to time on ebay or places like abebooks.com or alibris.com.

I'm looking to add a book about Duesenbergs to my automobile collection. I'm interested in the history of the car more so than a book of mostly new photos and little text. Also if any focus on owners and their restorations?
Your thoughts on which book I should buy and and overview would be very helpful.
