We drove through the remainder of New Mexico and continued west on 40 to Williams, AZ. We passed through many beautiful mountains along the way. The sky was clear, but it was cold most of the day. As we traveled with the top down, we wore layers of clothing.

We passed the volcanic tunnels, petrified forests, and the Painted Desert. The colors weren’t great in the Painted Desert because we went through around noon. There were many unique rock formations and colors.

There were several Indian gift shops as we traveled long distances without a gas station or town. At one of the Indian shops we stopped for lunch and Mike's door handle spring broke. Mike wired it shut and we were able to continue on our way.
The snow covered mountains was spotted at a distance from Flagstaff.

Hello Joan and Mike,

thank you for sharing. This "Redstone-Dessert" was always one of my favorite areas when I traveled the western part of the USA.

Don't miss to make a stop-over in Seligman, Az. and its historical "Route 66" scenic stores and especially the Barbershop of Mr. Angel Delgadillo, he is one of the founder of the "Historic Route 66 Assosiation"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_Delgadillo

And I think there is aswell a german restaurant, called Lilo's Cafe. It is said that there will be served very good german "specialties" like "Bratwurst with smashed potatoes and (Sauer)kraut".

Have a nice trip!

Today we decided to go to the Grand Canyon. Mike did a few errands before we left. The weather was rainy and cold. On the way we spotted these metal sculptures.

We drove to the South Rim in a light rain. The Auburn was ogled everywhere we stopped. We thought it might be a wasted trip because the dreary day, but it was beautiful, and that is an understatement. When the sun broke through it was breathtaking.
Here is a sampling if the photos we took today.

After visiting several sites along the South Rim, we turned around and retraced our drive, stopping for lunch and continuing back to our hotel. We saw two herds of Elk, and a wolf. This is the first we spotted Elk on this trip, but we have seen a couple herds of antelope and saw a wolf before today.

When we arrived back at the hotel, I checked the weather again because Mike wants to clean the car and it’s still raining and getting colder. They are supposed to have 3-5 inches of snow between tonight and tomorrow. We decided to leave our paid for hotel and go to Kingman, where the elevation is lover and the temperatures are warmer. Here a picture of the cloud opening on the way to Kingman, Where it is at least 20 degrees warmer.

Tomorrow we will be at the Western ACD Meet in Las Vegas. Our experience with Casino Hotels is that the internet there is slow, and not free, therefore I will probably not be posting while we are there. I will post after the meet when we have good internet again.

Thankyou for posting the photos and stories. We flew over from Australia and spent 2 months in the USA. My son and I recently attended the ACD meet in Auburn and travelled "almost" the same route that you both travelled to Las Vegas. If only we could have done it in "style" like you both did. One day!! Thankyou again - we really enjoyed this.
