ilikescars created the topic: Gasoline additives (lead)
I was wondering if anyone has tried using tetraethyl lead additive to their gasoline. According to the literature, it raises the octane of regular gasoline to around 100 and it boosts the gasoline boiling point about 60 degrees, eliminating vapor lock. I know alot of Auburn owners use an electric fuel pump to try & eliminate vapor lock. Maybe this would be a good alternative.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Adding tetraethyl lead to gasoline is illegal. I doubt if you can even buy the stuff in the USA. The "lead" additives available --- like Red Line, for example --- are mostly phosphorus. Their purpose is to provide some of the lubrication to valve seats that used to be offered by TEL. TEL has no affect on the volatility of the fuel, which is the issue with vapor lock.

Hi, Josh: I looked up Jack Podell in Indiana, who is selling a TEL additive: Max Lead 2000 (59 grams of TEL per gallon) Podell advertises in Hemmings, so maybe it's not really lead. <a href="mailto:podellsfi@aol.com]podellsfi@aol.com[/url]

Josh: I received an email from Jack Podell, & he said he's selling the real TEL. An EPA ruling in 93 sez that TEL can no longer be produced, but can be sold from existing inventory (which is what he is doing)

Thought you might be interested in that lil' tidbit.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that.

So I concede that you can buy the stuff. (Ethyl Corporation is still manufacturing it for use in gasoline in third-world countries.)

But why would you want to? TEL is a very toxic compound. In 1924 an accident at an experimental TEL plant operated by Standard Oil of New Jersey left at least five dead and thirty-five others suffering from tremors, palsies, and hallucinations --- the neurological symptoms of lead poisoning.

Why invite it into your garage, even in diluted form?
