I am rethinking the rod bearing issue. Is the reason you lose oil to the wrist pins and piston, is that the bearing inserts don't have a hole that matches the rods? You babbitted your cord rods?

I was told by someone that any babbitt bearing older than 30 years needs to be replaced. I'm not sure why this was told to me because I did not ask the big question... Why...

The problem I see with using inserts is that you lose the oil feed to the wrist pins and also the squirt hole which shoots oil to the thrust side of the cylinder walls as designed by Lycoming engineers. This extra oil up top would also help to take heat away from the top end. The babbit also goes right to the outside edges of the rods and around the radius at one end and thus gives more bearing contact surface. I have 72,000 miles on my 4 cylinder Indian motorcycle which I babbited myself and it still runs 45 LB oil pressure. I have just finished babbiting my own Cord engine. Tom

Just so there is no confusion out there ,some of us purists still employ babbitted main and rod bearings in our Cord FB and FC engines. I know they are old fashioned and technologically old school but they do the job. Going back to my earliest days of automotive experience as a base for opinion it seems to me if babbitt was good enough for 4-cylinder Model A Fords and 12-cylinder Auburn 12-160s it is good enough for my 8-cylinder Cord Supercharged. Commentary anyone? Happy Thanksgiving.

If you want to stick with Babbitt for some reason, Harkin Machine in Watertown South Dakota is the place to go. (605) 886-7880

You are correct Mike ! Auburn engines use MoPar rod bearings and Allis Chalmers mains.

The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
