I figured out the problem. The new T.O. bearing is slightly different from the original factory bearing. The C1288 sleeve was manufactured with a wide flange onto which the bearing is supposed to come in full contact. (In other words, fully pressed into place.) If the modern bearing is fully pressed onto this flange, the non-rotating part of the bearing will come in contact with the flange, causing it to be frozen in place and not rotate as designed. Curt recommended putting a shim onto the sleeve first, which is the easiest method. My solution was to machine-off about a 16th of an inch around the perimeter of the flange. Both methods will work.

It may have been pressed too far on the C1-288 sleeve, or it was not a good press fit and it was pushed back into the sleeve. Even new parts go bad sometimes. Give a call if you need a new one.

Yes, I understand that it must be replaced. Simply asked for input for the best replacement bearing.

throwout bearing was created by ilikescars
Hi all: I recently installed a rebuilt clutch into my 35 Auburn. No problems when the engine is idling in neutral, but when I depressed the clutch there was a noise as if the t.o. bearing was in trouble. I held the clutch in for a minute and the sound lessened, but after a while a scary amount of white smoke came out of the hog's head. It's a bearing that was still in it's package prior to installation and it has a grease fitting. Seemed to rotate OK before assembly. Now I'm thinking that it had laid around too long on a shelf and is not as good as I thought. (The smoke smelled like burning grease, not engine oil) Any recommendations on a good bearing to take it's place?
