Good Discussion. I think it is helpful to people new to Auburns. I found it confusing when I first purchased my car. I wonder if it wasn't just the one dealer, Auburn Sales Co in New York City, that was creating a "Deluxe" car. There is a picture of one on page 245 of Don Butlers book. The caption reads;
"The ultimate in Auburns with company-approved extra cost goodies was this Custom Cabriolet at the Auburn Sales Co. in New York City. Fittings included six wire wheels, a trunk rack and a 3-piece rear windshield for the rumble seat passengers. Also, a Pilot-Ray lamp, dual trumpet horns, a grille screen, front fender guide, spotlight, clock mirror, and spring covers have been added. A new car so equipped was sold as a Custom Deluxe car, and could be bought directly off the showroom floor. Slowly catching on in the industry, radios were not yet made available by the Auburn company."

I agree with Randy and think it was the Dealer optioned cars that cause the confusion. If we go by the Factory issued Instructions Manual and the Factory issued Details and Description Manual, it's simply 8-100 Standard and 8-100A Custom.

Again note Factory calls them 8-100 and 8-100a std and custom .dealers refer to deluxe not the Factory. Randy

That is how I read it. For eight cylinder cars, I think it was only 8-100 and 8-100A in 1932. It gets even more confusing if you look at the attached from the 2001 ACD Newsletter #9. I think they were just trying to sell cars in the middle of the Depression, any way they could.

Thank you, David
Options were certainly a high profit area for dealers, so it's possible that this dealer put together a package and advertised it as a "Deluxe." Being located in New York City, he was probably able to get away with it easier than dealers in most cities.

I suspect that there is nothing about the car that would signify that it is a "Deluxe" version, other than the options themselves. In other words, anyone can outfit their car with those options and call it a "Deluxe."

Doesn't the 3rd 8-100A in Dave's posting say " Custom Deluxe Models"

The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

That is really interesting that they made a model with all those accessories on it (as a package). Oversized tires are nice touch. Also, I see very few original photos with any of this equipment and certainly very very rare with "all" this equipment on a car.

I haven't found the word Deluxe used in any factory 1932 literature but dealers may have used it. This is from the #6 issue of the 1998 ACD Newsletter.

West, Auburn liked to use the word "Custom" quite a bit, as well as Salon.

Did Auburn use the word "Deluxe" for the 8-100A?
