Marvelous images of your progress in replicating the wooden components of your cabriolet body. Such skilled work. And there again is that lovely black & red Auburn speedster , lurking in the stall adjacent to your machine. Keep up the good work, Jack Richards #1080 in Missouri, USA

Hi Jason, yes the chassis is black and the bumper bars will be black with the silver/chrome caps...I think these can be bought new from the Auburn Museum.

I think all numbers were black rather than body colour...I might be wrong. But as I'm going to pain the car black and red the numbers will stay black.

I should be able to post more updates soon...I need to chase Larry to see where he is with the project.

Cheers

Hi Peter - is your chassis black?? I think I can spy it from your photographs. What colour are you going to do front & rear bumper bars? I have studied several photographs and most appear to be black with silver/chrome caps. Just deciding on how to go with my 120. cheers

Hi Bruce, happy to help with the photos. The wooden top is just really the template and now that we have everything working again, we are going to use the template to make the final top.

It's a long process, but we are getting there.

Cheers

Thankyou very much for taking the time to put these photos up. I am about to restore my 4-44 Roadster and the detail in the images for the woodwork is priceless to me. (and no doubt to a lot of people in the same boat). So thankyou. :

Hi Jonathan, thanks for the comments on the 8-95 project.
Yes the car behind mine is indeed a speedster...I can't remember if it's a 28 or 29 car, but I'll find out for you when I next see the car.

DEAR SIR:
THANK YOU FOR THE MARVELOUS POSTINGS YOU CONTINUE TO MAKE TO THIS THREAD ON THE AUBURN CABRIOLET RESTORATION WHICH YOU HAVE UNDERTAKEN. WE ARE ALL VICARIOUSLY ENJOYING SEEING YOUR CONSIDERABLE PROGRESS AND THE CRAFTSMANSHIP EMPLOYED. I AM INTRIQUED BY THE VEHICLE SITTING BEHIND YOUR CABRIOLET IN THE REPAIR GARAGE. IT APPEARS TO BE ANOTHER AUBURN OF SIMILAR VINTAGE AND IN RATHER DECENT CONDITION. FROM THE PHOTO IMAGES IT IS DIFFICULT TO BE SURE BUT IS IT A SPEEDSTER MODEL? THANKS FOR SATISFYING MY CURIOSITY. Hi Jason, thanks for your comments and good luck with your restoration too. I'll let you know how much it's going to cost to rebuild the engine...it can't be that complicated to rebuild...but like all restorations, I'm sure it's going to cost more than I thought

Hi Peter, your Auburn is looking great. I am about to embark on my 8-120 restoration. Once I move the spare engine from the front of the car I will be able to move it to the body shop. Also about to get an engine quote, it would be interesting to see a USA quote compared to an Aussie quote. I have allowed around a thousand per cylinder plus some (should have got a 4cyl). Regards

I thought I would post an update on the car, it may not look like much has happened since the last update, but we are still making progress...sorry for the quality of the photos, I'll try and do better ones next week.

We are still missing 2 atillery wheels to be used as spares in the fenders, so if you have any or know of any please let me know.

I'll be getting a quote on the engine rebuild this week...

We are going to have to order more wood this week too, the wooden top template is almost done, so now it's time for the final wood to be cut and fitted.

Hi Andreas, thanks for the comments. Did you see the period colour chart on the previous page? I think we settled on Coach Painters Red - Light, something that is not too bright but not too brown-red.

I saw the colour on a 29 Speedster he has in his shop, it looked good on the car.

Cheers

Good job, still a long way to go...
I also checked the color combination by photo shop. Black-Red is a tough combination. I made some sample doors and fenders frome the bone yard. You will be surprised about the difference between a small sample and a complete panel. Finally I did go for a kind of brown-red, because the first choice "carmin red" was far too bright. Keep in mind, the colors were much more decent those days.

Keep us posted.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I need some help...please.

With the top frame hinge, is the chrome nut on the outside or the inside?, see the photos below. Do any of you have any photos of this top hinge?

For me, it looks like it should be on the outside as the bend in the arm looks like it should avoid the wood...in the other photo it looks too tight, but that's only because we are testing it at the moment and nothing is fixture perminantly yet...still lots of adjustments going on.

[img

...here is the original section the top arm/hinge bolts too, but we don't know if there is anything missing as this is all that was on the car...

...and here is a photo from the other side of the car

Thanks for the comments...I went down to see the car again yesterday and it's coming along nicely...still lots to do in putting together this giant jig-saw puzzle back together again. The woodwork is just held together with a few screws at the moment and not glued until everything is aligned and adjusted...as you never know what you might have to redo as it comes together.

I thought I would update my posts with a few more photos...since the last post.

We've had to replace some of the rotten wood, it's a shame all of this work will be covered once the sheet metal is on the body.

It was around this that I started to think of paint...

...and started playing with photoshop a little and ended up with a red & black combination

The wheel were the first colour test

So now it was back to more work on the body, the more we dug the more needed replacing...but we are almost there

With the help and patience of Neal Ziff we were able to look at his car, take measurements and generally use it as a source of reference during the restoration of my car...

I'm going down to see the car in the morning and will post some fresh photos soon, but for now here are two of the latest photos showing work to the top structure...it finally has a convertible top frame again...

Thanks

Peter

saw that you're in La Habra - if you'd like, you can come out to Temecula and see my 8-95 for comparison. I think I can show you where all the cert #'s are.

I thought I'd add a photo of the leather and leatherette I've rescued from the car...the leather was taken from the door panels, I made sure I took a sample from behind the door as well. I'm hoping this has seen less direct sunlight so hopefully hasn't faded as much.

The two tone green leatherette or vinyl was taken from behind the front seat and under where the convertible top folds down.

So as the car was a green car, the leather looks like it was green too...was this standard? I only ask as I've only seen brown on a green car.

Cheers

Peter

La Habra is the next city east of me. I'm located in Whittier Ca. I can get a closer look at it if that will help determine what you have. I will need to know where to look for the numbers because I'm a Cord owner but love to investigate too.

Randy/Peter,

the chassis number should be at the very front frame horn where the spring attaches. this is where the number was for my 1930 8-125 and we also certified a few 1930 models with the numbers there also.

Hi Randy, I don't have much information at the moment. It's currently in California and the previous owner bought it about 10 years ago from someone on the East Coast (I think!).

But I'll send him an email tonight to see if I can find more details, even to see if he has a copy of the old title....

I'm still trying to make my mind up if I should stay with the original two tone green or go with a period color combination...

Thanks

Hi Andreas, thanks for the comments...I wish it were my workshop but it's a friends and yes I've told him he should clear some space around the car to work.

The chassis is all done and painted and recently he's been replacing the rotten wood with new wood, then we'll get around the the metal work...

I hope to have a fresh update soon.

Hi Peter

great project and nice pictures. Keep us posted.
I am shure some of the fellows will be able to tell you more about the colors.

First you will have to achieve some space around the car in your great work shop, just to work at the car

My 1930 Auburn 8-95 project car was created by barwick27
Hi, I've just bought this 1930 Auburn Cabriolet 8-95 and am new to owning anything like this, so I thought I'd reach out and ask the ACD community for a little help in my research....

I'm told the VIN number (GR22157) and engine number are the same, on the wooden floor there is the number X-7534, if this is of interest to anyone, or maybe you can help me decode the car that would be great.

Does anyone know of a color chart or correct color spec for a 1930 Auburn? We've discovered that under all the red and black paint the original color seems to be a light green and a bright green stripe on the door.

I've been told it might be 'Cat's Eye Green' and 'Cat's Eye Gray' but they seem to be 1929 colors not 1930 colors...can anyone help in my search?

I found an old poster on ebay that seems to be a similar color, but with a darker green stripe on the door and a brown interior...

Even though mine has very little in the way of an interior, I still have enough to see that it had light green leather door panels and the same color leather for the tool pouch...at first I thought the color might be faded over the years, but some of the leather that hasn't seen the light of day is still pale green...were there other interior colors to these cars besides brown or black?

We still have a long way to go, but I hope to have it back on the road in the next few years...

Thanks in advance for any help

Peter
