I would recommend removing the cable to clean the core and housing, then checking the core for kinks before lubricating with a light lithium grease or one of the commercially available cable lubricants. You need only lubricate the first 2/3 of the core as you insert it into the housing to prevent over lubrication.

I used "Slip Plate" graphite coating. It goes on kinda like a paint. Purchased from McMaster Carr. Works very well.

Beware using to much lub. It will wick into the head of the speedometer and cause faulty readings.

Auto part stores have a lubricant in a tube for this problem. I think it has some grahpite (?) in it.

speedometer cable noise was created by Neal Ziff
My speedo cable makes a horrible noise periodically. I can sometimes stop it by reaching under the dash and adjusting the shape of the cable. I have disconnected it from the gauge and used 3M light weight oil (sewing machine oil) in it, but it does not eliminate it entirely.
Is my problem lubrication, or the type of lubricant - or perhaps something else?
Thanks,
Neal
